One of my officers was a platoon leader in the 82nd sent to NO. We sat there one night in Iraq as he told us about watching in NVGs all the corrupt cops loot homes while the city was still under evacuation orders. It continues to radicalize us.

Nuance is how we got here. We need balance in the force. So fuck that guy. He sucked.
Mike Jason (@mikejason.bsky.social) reply parent
All true. But the prevailing historiography of Bobby Lee is almost exclusively fanboi worship brought to us by the 100 years of lost cause. So I am absolutely in favor of pushing the themes that he was an asshole and a traitor and unworthy of serious additional study.

Yes! Like a "general" who didn't suck.
Mike Jason (@mikejason.bsky.social)
1) NO. esp in context of U.S. Army---West Point statues, paintings, barracks; Army bases. This is the point. 2) He sucked as a GO. Maybe a good colonel--maybe. Generals have to understand the political, economic, societal forces backing their efforts. He fundamentally did not. 3) Agreed.

Col Lee was the only colonel of his cohort to join the treasonous rebellion---surprising even his family. The rest of his southern peers maintained their oaths to the Constitution and stayed in the U.S. Army. Contrary to his genteel facade, he was also a cruel slaver. Aka a piece of shit.

Finally someone doing the math right. 200 dudes is one company plus a battalion c2 node with some pieces of HHC--commo, mechanic, medics etc. Then take out company C2. Maybe you got three not fully manned platoons. Each platoon gets a checkpoint to man 24/7. So, 200=3 squads.

Would add that he Italians have been running the Strade Sicure program for a decade. Putting soldiers at key tourist sites for added security. The units are 100% in non tactical vehicles (NTVs). A mix of old LR Defenders and new Silver Jeep Wr with Army branding. www.lecceprima.it/cronaca/stra...
Mike Jason (@mikejason.bsky.social) reply parent
Precisely. The fatal accident I described had no ground guide. The vehicle above has an CROWS system---so no turret gunner. Mine (SOF variant) were the same. These units should be in 100% NTVs.
Mike Jason (@mikejason.bsky.social) reply parent
Also, this is National Guard. How many driving hours you think this unit's operators have on these vehicles? Assuming they are licensed properly. lol.
Mike Jason (@mikejason.bsky.social) reply parent

One of my best people was run over and killed by this type of vehicle. At slow speed. Anything can happen. If you trip in front of it, or lean down to pick up a dropped iPhone, NO ONE on board can see you.
Mike Jason (@mikejason.bsky.social)
The vision out of the MRAP is really really and for the crew. It's not made for this type of driving. It was common in Iraq and Afghanistan to run over locals on scooters---they were brazen and erratic around us. But our guys also ran over kids, causing not just deaths but trauma for our Soldiers.
Mike Jason (@mikejason.bsky.social) reply parent
Agree. Faith in the military has been built up on the left in drops since Vietnam and DADT. It's tenuous. Faith from the right has been eroding through culture wars. The military can rapidly find itself on the outs on all sides.

I suspect it's community dependent. And maybe my argument is improved by stating "the soft support for NG troops of those looking at images from the outside"
Mike Jason (@mikejason.bsky.social)
I am bouncing this half baked argument in my brain: The soft support for NG Soldiers appearing in our cities as an indictment on the collapse of faith in our civilian LE enterprise. Communities still trust the U.S. Army as LE is increasingly seen as partisan. It's not good. Thoughts?

There is a difference between grabbing peasants and handing them a spear/musket vs the professionalization of private citizens into a large scale force. From the civil war on, Union side, and through the 20th/21st century with the Total Army concept, would argue there is no historical parallel.
