Mostly just reading your-all posts, trying to resist the urge to post myself. If I don't follow back or otherwise misbehave, it's almost certainly not a deliberate thing. I just don't know how to use this thing.

She was brought to the US as an 8yo, worked hard, studied, earned a scholarship, planned to become a nurse. ICE kidnapped her. Held her for 6 MONTHS in a detention facility with conditions so miserable that she finally agreed to voluntarily move to Honduras, which her family left at gunpoint.

(sorry occurs to me it may seem like i was trying to refute you when i quoted Pound, but was really trying to give a smarty-pants quote in support of what you said. but then, granting that "taste" & "quality" are different things, i do think taste is also its own thing, not to be scorned...

(from memory, sorry): "A man who has climbed Mont Blanc may prefer Dorsetshire to Switzerland, but will not think that the Peak [in Dorsetshire] is the highest mountain in Europe" -- Ezra Pound, in (i think) the "ABC of Reading". But the preference is also its own thing...

On the whole I agree with yourself & GFM here, but also...turtlenot has their own taste, & that is its own thing. Can't deny one's own taste. (Mr T w/ the "ignorance" remark is maybe trying to make the point that you're rebutting, & i get off the bus there. but before that, there is something imo)
mikemolloy (@mikemolloy.bsky.social) reply parent
Yes, agreed. But also...look, Mr turtlenot made the remark about "sign of ignorance," and on that I expect I would agree with yourself (if I'd read Vuong, but I have not). Taste does not reduce arguments, or refute judgments of value. Still, it is its own thing, & judgments don't refute it either
mikemolloy (@mikemolloy.bsky.social) reply parent
when i was a kid i overheard a librarian dismissing something, Hardy Boys i think, which i’d read & enjoyed. pretty sure that nowadays, i would dismiss Hardy Boys too. but liked them then. no substitute for your own judgment, about a book

It's profoundly saddening to read that AP will no longer be assigning or running book reviews because readers don't engage with them enough and they take too much effort to plan and assign. People complain about critics as gatekeepers; wait until all that's left is marketing.
