Among other things, there has been a total collapse of any pretense that government agencies aren't overtly partisan tools distinguishable from campaign accounts.

Every so often I hear people saying that "the public" has a deep seated, unshift able hostility to immigration, and feel the need to post this.

Poll showing fraction of the public saying that immigration should be increased or decreased. Between 2000 and 2020, the fraction saying that immigration should increase rose steadily, and was briefly greater than the fraction saying it should be decreased. Then after 2020 the fraction saying that immigration should decrease rose sharply.

Last year, Idaho passed a strict law that forbids anyone from providing to a minor any service that could be construed as medical or psychological in nature without parental consent. Now, minors calling the state's suicide hotline are being forced to have a parent speak for them or hang up

More than 1,500 Idahoans between the ages of 5 and 17 contacted the hotline between when the parental consent law went into effect on July 1, 2024, and June 30, 2025, according to data provided by the Idaho Crisis and Suicide Hotline. Some of those young people can’t move forward in their call without a parent giving permission. Sometimes, a parent or guardian can get on the phone, according to Idaho 988 Director Lee Flinn, “but in most situations, the minor hangs up because they tell us they feel like they can’t do that.” “We really do want and hope that minors have a parent or two parents that support them, but one of the things that we hear sometimes is that they don’t have a parent they can talk to,” Flinn said. She emphasized that the hotline still accepts calls from anyone, and encourages people of any age to call, text or chat online if they are in crisis.

Bail reform increases safety, pretrial incarceration DECREASES public safety Good op-ed in @nytimes.com from my friend David Gaspar (and Jeremy Cherson) @bailproject.org www.nytimes.com/2025/09/01/o...

Today, families are often asked to come up with thousands of dollars for bail with little notice. That’s in a country where over a third of adults would not be able to cover an unexpected expense over $400. Bail bond agents profit from this imbalance and lobby hard to protect it. This helps preserve a system where most of the people in local jails haven’t been convicted of a crime. Research suggests that even 72 hours in jail can increase the chance of future rearrest. Jail disrupts the very things that keep people stable. A few days behind bars can mean losing a job or a driver’s license, falling behind on rent or being expelled from school. This instability creates extraordinary challenges for people when they are released, increasing their chances of being swept back into the system for things like low-level charges. Worse still, jail makes it difficult to mount a defense because it cuts people off from legal support. Every minute, people are pulled into this system.

Useful to think about this administration as a set of reactionary regime changes. At CDC, from pro-science to pro-quackery. And, at the Pentagon, from pro-Union to pro-Confederacy.

RFK must go. Please contact your congresspeople about this. Ask them why RFK was allowed to unilaterally fire a senate appointee because she contacted senators – the appropriate oversight body – after the HHS secretary demanded that she break the law & betray Americans’ public health.

One of several top CDC officials to leave their post this week—after Kennedy fired the agency’s director for refusing to “rubberstamp unscientific, reckless directives"—is telling all. Including that Kennedy has never been briefed by any of the center’s scientists on major diseases. trib.al/j3PrEDR

I have never seen so many public servants protest the mismanagement of a government. Trumpists will point to this as proof of the deep state, but the reality is that these are professionals who are desperately trying to get the public to understand how bad things are.

Kennedy and his allies are malicious actors who don’t care about science or public health. They all have axes to grind. People will die because of it and they do not care. Eugenics are back, baby. The ‘health as an indicator of virtue’ crowd are in charge.
