Today I spend 90 min. chatting with four fellow scholars who I feel strong solidarity with about an amorphous project. I did not record this conversation. While I know none of us have enough time to really do this on the regular, this whole HigherEd thing can’t survive if we don’t.

BREAKING: New York Governor Kathy Hochul is set to sign an executive order allowing pharmacists to prescribe and administer Covid-19 vaccines to anyone who requests them, regardless of age or underlying conditions.

VACCINES FOR ALL: Gov. Kathy Hochul is set to sign an executive order allowing pharmacists to prescribe and administer Covid-19 vaccines to New Yorkers who request them, according to plans shared exclusively with Playbook. The Democrat’s executive order will mirror actions taken by other blue state governors this week to protect access to the latest Covid vaccine. The Food and Drug Administration has only granted limited approval of the jab for older adults and individuals considered to be high-risk. That’s prompted Democratic leaders to create their own vaccine guidance and explore ways they can legally protect access to the shot for everyone. “By signing this EO, Governor Hochul is making it clear that when Washington Republicans play politics with public health, New Yorkers will still be able to make their own health care decisions and get the care they need from trusted providers in their community,” Hochul spokesperson Kara Cumoletti said in a statement to POLITICO. This morning, POLITICO Pro reported that the Hochul administration is reviewing potential solutions to the Trump administration’s efforts to restrict vaccine access. However, a long-term fix may require legislative changes by lawmakers either through a special session, or when they return to the state Capitol in January. “This temporary order will ensure seamless access while the Governor works with the Legislature on a long-term solution to safeguard preventive care and vaccines,” Cumoletti added. — Katelyn Cordero

Everyone is rushing to defend Graham Linehan as some martyr to free speech but don't actually state what he tweeted. He explicitly called for people to violently assault trans women in the bathroom. In another instance, he cyberstalked a trans minor. He's legitimately a danger to trans people.

Alt text: A screenshot of a tweet from Graham Linehan (@Glinner) posted on April 20, 2025. The tweet reads: “If a trans-identified male is in a female-only space, he is committing a violent, abusive act. Make a scene, call the cops and if all else fails, punch him in the balls.” The tweet shows engagement counts: 629 comments, 71K retweets, 20K likes, and 534 bookmarks. (Note: The content contains transphobic and violent language.) The tweet, posted October 22, 2024 at 12:57 PM, reads: “We believe … is studying computer science somewhere in London. If you know … and want to help to stop … harassing people, please get in touch.” The attached image is obscured by a large pink rectangle. The tweet shows 20.7K views. The tweet, posted October 22, 2024 at 12:53 PM, reads: “More … footage from the weekend.” It includes a video thumbnail partly obscured by a large red rectangle. The video length is 3:20, with 171.9K views.

I finally read computer scientist Joseph Weizenbaum’s 1976 classic “Computer Power and Human Reason.” This book deserves a massive revival in our current age of grotesque and largely thoughtless AI creep into everything:

Comparing Rowling to Jones is *not fair*. Jones is actually funny and has likeable characters in her books! You can't tell where she's going to end up by the end of the first chapter! "Dark Lord of Derkholm" was even ridiculous in ways that made sense. Oh, the cruelty.

Remember this news? The city council was planning to hold this vote for mid-August, but they then postponed it, in part due to pressure they were facing. But the vote is now coming up again: It's scheduled for September 11, next Thursday.

Students being progressive is not a bigger problem than a sustained assault by an authoritarian president, please get a grip www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...

Higher Ed Has a Bigger Problem Than Trump Universities should see the president’s interventions as a wake-up call, not the root of their troubles. By E. Thomas Finan Universities can begin to assuage this skepticism by committing to addressing America’s biggest problems, starting with polarization. American colleges must become a venue for the frank but charitable exchange of ideas. College is not simply a debating society, yet many schools risk stifling dialogue, even if unintentionally. A recent study of University of Michigan and Northwestern University students by the psychology researchers Kevin Waldman and Forest Romm found that 72 percent reported self-censoring their political beliefs. Perhaps more troubling, 82 percent had turned in work that misrepresented their beliefs “to align with a professor’s expectations.” Such pervasive self-censorship not only undercuts universities’ academic mission—it also validates the widespread suspicion that campuses replicate bias instead of challenging it.
