Washington wine exports to Canada have gone to 0%. As a winery owner here I didn't export, but my grower does, and now I have to compete with product to be exported dumped back on the domestic market. Obviously with the disruption domestic US wineries will go under. (We love Okanogan Vly wine, FYI)

I've done multiple commercial solar projects. If you are financing them they were cash flow positive at 12 cents per kilowatt hour at a 4.5% rate on a 25 year loan. We should have solar generation on every factory with a new roof in this country. Residential the math is tougher.

If they might have a tariff tomorrow, or don't know what the rate will be after the next TACO, they have to increase prices today to cover all options. This is pretty normal behavior. I.e. the measurable downside of conducting trade policy by tweets.
Mark Lathrop (@mlathrop.bsky.social) reply parent
I don't know if it's greedflation for a CFO to go, "if tariffs = X then price increase has to be Y". Since the 'if tariffs' part is an open question you are still going to get the price increase to cover it. Especially if not covering it puts you out of business.
Mark Lathrop (@mlathrop.bsky.social)
The manufacturers I've talked to extended pre-tariff component inventories to 180 days (from 90 or 120). This is exactly when this was going to start happening.

Uh...companies are consumers! But don't worry, we are increasing prices to cover it. I was hoping to increase prices because my product is good and to make more money though. 'Trillions' in tariff revenue would create an instant recession with its drag on GDP. Someone shoot this guy already.

This and we had a 100-year hail storm event in Liberty Lake a few years ago. A few insurers just left the market, so the ones that remain can (and have to) jack the prices on the remaining pool. Washington wineries also specifically got hit with increases for some reason.

This also affects commercial real estate. Our winery building loan payment is $3,700/month. Our (bank required) insurance went from $1,000 to $1,700 month this year. A 70% increase.
Mark Lathrop (@mlathrop.bsky.social)
Watch the banks in this space. They take a security interest in crops when any kind of loan is used for operating a farm. If a crop can't be harvested, or is at risk of being left on the vine, they won't lend money to farmers to plant in the first place.
