I think it goes much deeper than "performative stuff". It is sand in the cogs, people may also see it as a safer way to protest. It is claiming back some public space and any and all push back against what is happening is good. And I would not sacrifice "good" for "better".
A thing that fucks people up is the refusal to take babysteps in doing something they suck at. Instead of starting where they can, and gradually improving, they just get frustrated that they're not already good at it and never even start.
