I just learned that Brent Hinds has died, apparently a motorcylce accident where a driver failed to yeld. Brent was one of a kind. He was from Pelham, AL, co-founder of Mastodon, guitar player & singer. His guitar skills only matched by his sense of humor & cooking. Go play for Ozzy, Brent!

Happy Church Day! To celebrate, I finished a new pedal, and I thought I'd share. Behold, "Rusalka"... again! "Rusalka" is my MOSFET Boost pedal, but with this version, I've added a Dallas Rangemaster, aka a Treble Boost. A Rangemaster is handy for lower tunnings. #Dogma #guitarpedal #diypedals
Troubleshooting is fun. Sometimes, you find a 22 uF cap where a 2.2 uF cap should go. The other day, when I was getting a 4.7k resistor I needed, I noticed a bag of 4.7m resistors had one missing. Somewhere, something doesn't work quite right. And sometimes, it's just quicker to build a new pedal.
I've been calling him Fuhrer 47 for a while we now.

Feel like I've lost track of musicians who've more than influenced me passing. Stevie Ray, Randy, Cliff, Chris, Kurt, Dime, Vinnie, Jeff, Lemmy, Ronnie, Peter, Tina, and King Edward. Dozens more if I really sat and thought.
Today was rough. Set up a guitar with the wrong string gauge. Drilled wrong holes in a pedal. And Ozzy. All I can think of is my wife who passed 3 years ago. Ozzy was so much of our lives. His music. We planned meals around The Osbornes show. I miss her. Too many chapters have closed. No new ones.
RIP Ozzy Osbourne - the original Prince of Darkness. A voice that echoed like thunder across worlds, a spirit too wild for just one realm. Azeroth salutes you.

Having a bad night. Watched Ozzy & Black Sabbath's last show. At the end, the guys just walked away & left Ozzy there alone. Can't help think of my friend Jon. We had a falling out & he died. My wife, too, died. Tonight, we would have all been together, celebrated & rocked. I miss her the most.
"Frankie" is finally done. Based on an Oberheim VCF & fueled by my obsession with quirky Dweezil Zappa guitar sounds, I made a clone of a Maestro FSH-1. Of course, this started with Frank Zappa using this effect (see the song "Ship Ahoy"). Most analog pedal I've ever made. #diypedal #zappa #guitar

It was a busy week fueled by toasted coconut coffee & a soundtrack of Dogma & Castle Rat. I finished a new fuzz pedal based on the Doom Bloom Fuzz, revamped a pc board, & built 2 MosFet boost pedals. I am exhausted, hehe. Part 1 of this week's pedal stuff:

Thank you. The backplate does help. I also use copper tape on the inside. I'm new to pedal building. I think I have the wrong wires near the wrong things (+ wire near film caps). Still learning.
Thanks. I did (to all three arrays, each with 3 LEDs), & that seemed to help. But I think I know the bulk of the problem. I have a + wire running across & near the exposed legs of some film caps. Just moving the wire helped greatly. Didn't fix it, but I learned next time to wire it differently.
One of my pedal projects this week is noisey. I've already built this pedal once & that one is fine. I fear it's the array of LEDs & wires I'm using for a lighting effect. Can LEDs cause interference? Is there a way to or a device that can measure this? #diypedal #guitarpedal #fuzz
Two boost pedals & a fuzz pedal built. Photos to come. Did a last-minute change and used a B5k Pot instead of a 50k. Leason learned. Swapped it out with an A50k pot. I think originally I used B100k, but I had a 50k on the breadboard & schematic the fuzz pedal is based on has a B50k. #guitarpedals
Had this huge fear that once I finished the Maestro FSH-1 pedal, it wouldn't work, that I had missed something, misunderstood uf to nf conversion, wrong part used, etc. Couldn't easily test it on a breadboard, so I had to really wire it up in a pedal. To my amazement, the pedal does work. Joy!
This all started on a Dweezil & Ahmet Zappa album called Shampoohorn, from '93 as Z (formally AZ/DZ). I kept hearing an effect that sounded like a phaser/step filter. Frank used an Oberheim VCF on "Ship Ahoy" that Dweezil had digitally reproduced. Same circuit as the Maestro FSH-1. Homework is hard.
Got the 2 enclosures I had ordered in. Designed, drilled, & painted. Nearly done with the board for the clone pedal. At the point where I start wiring a switch, pots, etc. It's too late to keep at it tonight. Realized on my b&w printout, purple, green, & red wires all look gray. Hmm. #guitarpedal

Finally finished an old project. Loretta aka "Hungry" in a Hearse, more drive than fuzz. Sister to the Belle fuzz pedal. Trim pots for transistors & LEDs. Volume, Gain, Tone, & Bias pots. The blue LEDs clip & react to playing. The switch is for two different gains because why make your mind up?
New pedal soon. Did the enclosure design. Drilled one hole 1 mm too deep. That led to the discovery of recessed lights. Hehe. Maybe there's an equation out there that allows for the calculation of how many "Happy Accidents" one can have before catastrophic dumpster fire. The Bob Ross Equation.

Finished another pedal today, "Belle," a version of the Fuzz in a Jar but with a Bias & Tone plus a switch for two different voicings. With the Bias control, it cleans up very nicely becoming more of a Drive than a Fuzz. I drill & paint the enclosures. The artwork is from Monters and Martians.

Tornadoes rolled through today. Not as bad as it could have been, but a town nearby was hit, & I don't know how bad, yet. Also thought I killed the pedal I just built. Put it in the middle of my pedalboard. Sounded great at first but then sounded broken, starved. Some fuzz must be 1st in the chain.
Behold. Finished Single Transistor Fuzz loosely based on a Bazz Fuzz Pedal. Sounds like a dying amp from the 60s, low-end fuzzy, warm, and like the transistor is struggling to hold it together. Think White Stripes. I call it The Spectre.

When I started tinkering with guitar pedals I knew there would be failures. I just didn't know they would all happen at once. First major pedal project died this week on the circuit board. I think I got two resistors mixed up, poorly understood routing connections, & sucked at repairs. Learning.

Spent the last few days rebuilding a pedal on a breadboard that I first did a month ago. It did not sound the same. I think I got a goofy transistor. Guide said use a 50k pot to biass a 2n5088 but I couldn't get it under 5.7 volts. Used a 100k pot & did. None of this makes sense to me, either.
