Payton Tolle was a fascinating case today. He figures to be in the Red Sox postseason plans, but was not on the 40-man roster. They needed to make that move within the next 3 days for him to be eligible. Not elevate him to the big league club, but put him on the 40-man. (They did both)
There is an exception, though. If a player on the team's active roster gets injured, the team can petition the commissioner's office to add a minor leaguer on on the 40-man roster, as long as that player was in the org by August 31st. So you can't acquire an injury replacement in Sept
I get this question over and over this time of year which makes sense because the rules are confusing. *For a player to be eligible to make a team's postseason MLB roster, they must be in the organization either on the 40-man roster OR the 60-day injured list by 11:59 PM ET on August 31.
