My father died when I was 21, 54 years ago. His memory is absolutely a blessing, as I'm sure that of your father's is to you.
What a lovely memory. My dad didn't cook, but every Sunday, after Mass, he picked up a dozen Dunkin Donuts. A sweet memory but not a tradition I follow!

Dropkicks are great, and, as their tee-shirt has it, they've been "Fighting Nazis since 1996." They've been a known quantity around here for years. The Red Sox (and other teams) play "Shipping Up to Boston" at some crucial point during a game, and the Red Sox play "Tessie" after each game.
These craven nitwits give toadies a bad name.

I live near the Boston Common. The other evening, I heard choppers overhead and my first thought was Trump takeover because he hates us and our mayor. Turns out that there's a 250th USMarine birthday celebration going on there with all sorts of equpiment. But my first thought was end times.

I'm an American whose mother came through Ellis Island as a toddler. I vote. I volunteer. I march. I donate. I make protest signs. I write postcards. I'm old. Before I die, I'd like to see an America that provides "liberty and justice for all." Is this too much to ask?

Oh, dear. Sorry that you feel this way, as it sounds so painful. I, too, heard the summer night sounds while walking by the Boston Public Garden just now. It was a lovely distraction from how miserable the world can be at times.

My late husband's aunt and uncle had a tobacco farm in Western Mass. Jim worked there summers in h.s. and college. In the late 60's they converted the farm to a golf course. Still hard work, but not as grueling as tobacco farming!

A few years ago, I offered someone a seat on the subway. She looked at me like I had two heads. Only then did I realize she was probably a good 10 years younger. I'm 75, and the impulse remains. You can take the girl out of the Catholic school, but you can't take the Catholic school out of the girl.

Growing up, we had the white-guy Jesus in the hallway. Housewarming gift from a parish priest who played poker and golfed with my father. FYI, this picture is known colloguially as the "Chalice Head Jesus," because if you look at the side of his head in the right light, there's a chalice.
I always have to remind myself that Jonathan Turley and Jeffrey Toobin are different people. Maybe it's their having the same initials that always gives me pause, and I have to think for a moment which one is which.
Just made a donation to my old hometown ((Worcester Mass) radio station - they're down 18% but will likely survive. So also gave to a station in WV that might not make it. And West Virginia is sure a place that needs help more than Massachusetts does. Thank you for sharing this list.

Sigh is right. I've cut back on news and doomscrolling (other than this instance, obviously!) and am reading a lot more. At 75, my will to live is driven by seeing the end of Trump, MAGA, American fascism, right-wing SCOTUS. And see the principals and their enablers totally discredited and vilified.

It is beautiful. The people are great. There are wonderful pubs and some excellent food. Music and literature are stellar. I've been there many, many times and would be happy to jump on a plane tonight to head over once again.

I could still put on my Tom Lehrer album, sing along, and not miss a word. How daring it felt as a Catholic teenager to sing "The Vatican Rag." His songs were very much of the moment, yet timeless. A true genius.
My second game was against NY. July 1961. Saw Mantle and Maris hit back-to-back homers. This was the season these guys were both chasing Babe Ruth's record. I can't remember which team won. Probably the Yankees. Still remember the crowd, so excited just to be there in the bleachers with my dad.
Lifetime fan here. My first time at Fenway - July 1960 - I saw Ted Williams homer. ("We" beat Cleveland 6-4. I was 10.) I still get a thrill every time I walk in. (And walk to. Urban ballparks are the best!) Glad you got to see the hallowed ground. And a pretty good series.

If he pardons Maxwell, he'll be saying that her heinous criminal behavior matters not. He did this, of course, with the J6 rioters, but I believe people will find trafficking young girls to be a far worse offense. So pardoning her may not work. Plus the victims can always testify and name names.

That said, I don't reveal my last name or address, as some of the guests have substsantial mental health issues, can be confrontational, etc. I'm never afraid there, as I'm 100% confident that the folks I know would jump in to protect the nice grey-haired old lady if things got out of hand.
I'm a very long term regular (3x a week) volunteer in a large day shelter. Getting to know the guests is a privilege and joy. As you say, the line between "us and them" is thin.

I remember choking up when they played it at the Democratic convention when immigrant son Mike Dukakis was nominated. Dems should absolutely run on rationalizing immigration policy and stopping the terrorization of those who are caught up in our current evil and feckless modus operandi.
