Exactly. If it involves more than protecting federal people and property, the only legitimate legal authority is the Insurrection Act of 1792. And there is no demonstrably insurrection.

note: a state's right to self-defense does not necessarily connote a right to secession, this is a separate question.
Jesse Singal Vapes Piss (@mumbly-joe.bsky.social) reply parent
it's certainly why the Constitution doesn't countenance a standing army. Standing armies were certainly *known* at the time.
Jesse Singal Vapes Piss (@mumbly-joe.bsky.social) reply parent
genuinely, the most straightforward reading of that isn't an individual right to bear arms or undertake insurrection, but of States to deploy armed forces in defensive actions against aggressors whether internal or external. Arguably, this is what the founders had in mind.

It's literally the reason for the Second Amendment. To allow an organized militia (National Guard) to defend that state against federal aggression.
Jesse Singal Vapes Piss (@mumbly-joe.bsky.social) reply parent
militia movements hated the feds for the same reason Nazis all hate the feds, but they were all superfans of federal police powers and militarized action if the guns were aimed at minorities. More than happy to "self-deputize" to the border under Bush (in order to murder minorities), etc.
Jesse Singal Vapes Piss (@mumbly-joe.bsky.social) reply parent
none of this is to say the Oathkeepers actually *changed*-- the trajectory of militia movements charts out just fine once you realize they weren't "anti-government" per se at all: they just really liked Nazis and really hated minorities and that got them REALLY spun up about a Black President
Jesse Singal Vapes Piss (@mumbly-joe.bsky.social)
It's really really funny (but not "haha" funny) reading the "Oathkeeper Oath" the Oathkeepers launched with the 2010s, and then remembering that by 2020 they were acting as Friekorps for the trial run of the current military invasions and occupations Trump is doing
Saeed Jones (@theferocity.bsky.social) reposted
I know it’s all bad faith bs BUT I keep thinking about how the whole “reason” we apparently can’t pass any effective gun control legislation to prevent mass shootings is the idea that we need an armed populace in case the federal government decides to invade our cities and towns. Like??????????
