Hell of a Summer has a kind amateurish (for lack of a better word) quality to it, kinda like some young guys lucked into a budget and made a movie that's part homage to the summer camp horror subgenre and part coming of age comedy. The real horror comes from anxieties about the latter more than the
conclusion about masculinity, parental legacies and the misguided choices men make for ambition and family. I still like the film overall but the last third soured me 🍿
The Place Beyond the Pines (2012) is split into three sections and the first one is visually stunning (DP Sean Bobbitt) with terrific motorcycle scenes, the second section is interesting and the third is a flop where the characters seems to lose agency, the plot gets too tidy to get to a thematic

As a heist action comedy it's very thin, an excuse for Eddie Murphy and Pete Davidson to riff, which is fine. Some of the car chase scenes are decent with real stunts, some of the action is sloppy so it's a mixed bag. Keke Palmer should be in better stuff 🍿
