Jars of chutney, a little condensation inside some. Most of the lids are red gingham. They're on a wooden board.

Chutney making begins. Used up the last of some funky local apple cider vinegar, keeping the mother for more vinegar with the scraps.

A jam pan filled with chunks of apple and sultanas. Onion lurks below. Light brown soft sugar nearly covers it all. A vinegar 'mother' or scobie, a gelatinous brown mass, held above a colourful bowl.

Maybe it's just a possibility that we're capable of eating significantly less meat when so many don't even know or care where their meat comes from, and even self-professed experts like this numpty are fooled by a meat substitute? Barriers to adoption for many are probably entirely in their heads.

Pang of guilt that the apple tree tucked away on its own in a corner of the garden, swamped by sumac and cornus, has still given so generously this year. Note to self to be kinder to it in the future.

An apple hanging on a branch full of foliage, a little glossy in the sun. More apples, with staghorn sumac crowding them in the background. A full tray of apples with more on the ground. They're green with streaks of red, some a little blotchy.

It's that time of year when the press kicks off with this rubbish. Spiders just want a nice warm place to mate. UK species are overwhelmingly completely harmless, plus they eat flies and other insects, and they mostly want corners and places we don't use. Welcome our spidery friends.

A top-down view of two containers filled with freshly picked apples on a concrete floor. The left container holds a mix of green and red apples, while the right box is filled mostly with large green apples. At the top of the image, a small scruffy dog with dark fur looks curiously up at the camera. The tips of a pair of boots are just visible at the bottom of the frame.

Sheep on the common near us recently in hot weather, almost all sheltering under trees where the temperature is several degrees cooler. Tried (and so far not got far) to introduce low-density tree planting to a different common working with the landowner, to provide just this benefit to livestock.

Sheep sheltering under a copse of trees in hot weather. The grass is dappled with sunlight. More sheep in deep shade under trees.

I love a good field name. One field at my old place of work, TSB, which was over 30 hectares in size, was made up of the names of the three fields that created it when the hedgerows dividing them were grubbed out - Thieves Hole, Sparrow Gong and Brick Kiln Piece. www.fwi.co.uk/farm-life/wh...
