The story of how the 1st Akitas came to the US is remarkable. It starts with Helen Keller: She was a world celebrity following her 1903 book, "The Story of My Life", speaking on rights for people with disabilities & equally on pacifism, equality. She toured Japan on a speaking tour in 1937.
c0nc0rdance (@c0nc0rdance.bsky.social) reposted reply parent
She asked to visit the Akita district, having heard of Hachikō, the Akita dog who waited daily for 9 years at the train station for his master who had died in Tokyo & would never return. Hachiko died in 1935. During the tour, she met a real Akita and expressed interest in an Akita companion.
c0nc0rdance (@c0nc0rdance.bsky.social) reposted reply parent
A local policeman was asked to provide her with a puppy "Kamikaze-Go". Keller fell in love with "Kami" "If I cried from loneliness for my beloved teacher, he would put his big paw on my knee and press his cool nose against my cheek and lick away the tears."
c0nc0rdance (@c0nc0rdance.bsky.social) reposted reply parent
Unfortunately, Kami died from distemper at 8 months old. The Japanese government, hearing of the tragedy, offered as an official gift a puppy "Kenzan-Go". At a time when Japan-American relations were deteriorating, Keller's love for "Go-Go" created a demand in the US for the breed.

Availability of Akitas was limited during WWII, but GI's returned home with Akita puppies, and the breed was AKC recognized in 1955. Helen Keller: "Nobody, who is not blind, as much as they may love their pet, can know what a dog's love really means."
