The idea was described to me as 7 spots for Big Ten, 7 spots for SEC, 5 for ACC, 5 for Big 12, 2 G5, 2 at-large. First two rounds would be played on campuses. First round could be played during the current conference championship weekend.

To those wondering WHY Michigan would want to appeal today’s ruling: A source says it’s about the severity of the financial penalties. Previous record-high NCAA fine was $8M (Tennessee) and this one could be over $30M.

I asked Committee on Infractions chair Kay Norton whether she is concerned that the lack of postseason bans/vacation of wins as penalties in recent high-profile cases would no longer deter rule-breaking in the future. She said the COI doesn't write the rules it applies.
NCAA Committee on Infractions chair Kay Norton: "The NCAA took very quick action once it was apprised of the possibility of these violations, and therefore there was insufficient evidence in the record that the outcome of games was affected."
NCAA Michigan case chief hearing officer Norman Bay: "Vacation of records is only in play when there is ineligible competition. That was not a factor in this case. It was not a penalty that could be considered." (playing ineligible players)
By the way, a show-cause order essentially means if you hire this person, you have to tell the NCAA why you believe they can follow rules & that they'll have resources around them to make sure they don't break rules again.
It sure looks like Michigan is getting out of this with a big institutional fine, hefty penalties for coaches who no longer work there, and Sherrone Moore suspended for one more game than the school originally planned for. No postseason ban. No vacated wins.
The NCAA added a one-game suspension for Sherrone Moore (for deleting text messages). He'll be suspended for the first game of the 2026-27 season. The NCAA accepted Michigan's self-imposed two-game suspension for this season. The school has not announced which two games.
If Jim Harbaugh comes back to college in the next decade — he won't — he would have to be suspended for a full season.
Connor Stalions was given an eight-year show-cause order. If someone in college football were to hire him and show that he could follow rules, etc., he would still be suspended from 100 percent of the first season of his employment.
The NCAA: "Harbaugh ran a program that was largely dismissive of rules compliance. There was little, if any, emphasis on following the rules."
The NCAA says there were sufficient grounds for a multiyear postseason ban. "However, the panel determined that a postseason ban would unfairly penalize student-athletes for the actions of coaches and staff who are no longer associated with the Michigan football program."
