Adam Lytle (@nerdburglar.bsky.social)
Yes I'm cultured. The Culture
Adam Lytle (@nerdburglar.bsky.social) reply parent
Very nice! I was noodling around with a design for a TAS style ship for those nacelles myself, but ended up getting torn between a couple different ideas. Might find some time this weekend to make some decisions and post it.
Adam Lytle (@nerdburglar.bsky.social) reply parent
Probably this one?
Adam Lytle (@nerdburglar.bsky.social) reply parent
The two systems are loud in different ways, for sure. Something about the MTL trains, possibly the rubber tires makes them more high pitched in a way I'm not used to. Conversely TTC trains make all sorts of odd loud noise - like the AC on some of them is unreasonably loud so the time.
Adam Lytle (@nerdburglar.bsky.social) reply parent
Hot damn yes. It was just yesterday that I learned Ween stopped performing last year. Maybe they'll return and I'll get my chance, but honestly I wish I'd seen them circa '03.
Adam Lytle (@nerdburglar.bsky.social) reply parent
I think he also got caught faking a fan letter campaign to feature him in more stories?
Adam Lytle (@nerdburglar.bsky.social) reply parent
For one thing, anything that adds local resilience to the food supply is a good thing. For another, I think urbanites would benefit from being more connected to where food comes from. And in the *very* long term, these techniques will be employed in... (Tim Curry voice) spaaaacce.
Adam Lytle (@nerdburglar.bsky.social) reply parent
HOWEVER - I don't think vertical farming should just be abandoned. It may take a thousand incremental improvements to get it to the stage where it accounts for any significant percentage of our food production, but so be it. It would still be a net good for society.
Adam Lytle (@nerdburglar.bsky.social) reply parent
I do not think any amount of clever rigging is going to solve the fundamental problems with vertical farming. At the end of the day rural land is always going to beat out urban/suburban land on price.
Adam Lytle (@nerdburglar.bsky.social)
I would very much bet that Dyson have not, in fact, solved vertical farming.
Adam Lytle (@nerdburglar.bsky.social) reply parent
But of course once you're used to that and take it for granted I'm sure the charm wears off and you just want your (very loud) train to arrive. On the other hand, the bus wait times in Montreal could use some Toronto level improvements. Many trips ended up being just as fast to walk ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Adam Lytle (@nerdburglar.bsky.social) reply parent
I live in TO & visited Montreal this summer & didn't mind the slightly longer waits because, well let's face it I was on vacation and not stressed about getting anywhere but also the stations/platforms are a breath of fresh air compared to TO in terms of architecture and upkeep!
Adam Lytle (@nerdburglar.bsky.social) reply parent
Now I want a follow-up video about this cargo ship.
Adam Lytle (@nerdburglar.bsky.social)
The thing I like about detachable warp sleds and the like is that surely not every planet is cool with having anti-matter casually enter their atmosphere and land on the planet.
Adam Lytle (@nerdburglar.bsky.social) reply parent
In my case I'll bike to work in my outfit for the day if the weather is temperate, but on a hot day I'll bike in shorts/t-shirt and pack some office clothes to change into. Not a deal breaker by any means, but it is an added inconvenience.
Adam Lytle (@nerdburglar.bsky.social) reply parent
Thank you! I was searching for this one but couldn't find it
Adam Lytle (@nerdburglar.bsky.social) reply parent
They could even roll them out weekly rather than all at once. Create an ongoing discussion for those that would do the rewatch to check out the remaster.
Adam Lytle (@nerdburglar.bsky.social) reply parent
They did that moment on the recent CW Superman show. youtu.be/L_M9QKATpPo?...
Adam Lytle (@nerdburglar.bsky.social) reply parent
Small thing but I liked some of the tweaks to the Excelsior that showed up at the end. The blue glow on just the inner grills of the nacelles and the stripes on the darker sections of the secondary hull.
Adam Lytle (@nerdburglar.bsky.social) reply parent
It is comical how many copies of those books are on thrift store shelves.
Adam Lytle (@nerdburglar.bsky.social) reply parent
Thanks! My thought is that they have 2 sets of slim warp coils stacked vertically. This could be a cost saving measure as much as anything else - like perhaps they have a surplus of small coils normally used in a smaller ship class, and kludging them together into a single nacelle works okay enough.
Adam Lytle (@nerdburglar.bsky.social) reply parent
Ha, yes I recall holding a remote control and thinking it could be an engineering hull.
Adam Lytle (@nerdburglar.bsky.social) reply parent
Thanks! I pictured it on a small utilitarian vessel. The black bit on the back I figured could maybe be heavy duty tractor beam emitters that draw power from the warp plasma.
Adam Lytle (@nerdburglar.bsky.social) reply parent
Yup! Part of the beauty of kitbashing, incorporating found objects. Like I think one of the tug ships in TNG used disposable razor handles for nacelles or pontoons.
Adam Lytle (@nerdburglar.bsky.social) reply parent
Thanks! I like the idea of a more low profile bussards collector, more nestled into the nacelle superstructure.
Adam Lytle (@nerdburglar.bsky.social) reply parent
And FYI I don't mind at all if you make modifications - I love your design sense so I'm sure whatever you'd do would improve it.
Adam Lytle (@nerdburglar.bsky.social) reply parent
Absolutely!
Adam Lytle (@nerdburglar.bsky.social)
Was looking at my cigarette lighter and thought it would make a pretty good warp nacelle design.
Adam Lytle (@nerdburglar.bsky.social) reply parent
Love the way they swing for the fences. Even when the design is too weird to be something you could realistically expect to see in proper canon Trek, it is at least interesting.
Adam Lytle (@nerdburglar.bsky.social)
I'm mixed on the AppleTV Foundation series* but Lee Pace semi-channeling "The Dude" from The Big Lebowski for this season's version of his character is pretty great. *some of the choices are dicey in terms of staying true to the spirit of the books, I think... But willing to see how it plays out.

I am here for all the quirky TOS/TAS ships. Looking forward to whatever else you're cooking up. Everything has been great fun so far!
Adam Lytle (@nerdburglar.bsky.social) reply parent
This is the saddest pie chart I've ever seen.
Adam Lytle (@nerdburglar.bsky.social) reply parent
Oh yes that's certainly true, especially in the last few years. It's gotten really ridiculous lately.
Adam Lytle (@nerdburglar.bsky.social) reply parent
Yeah, it's hard to say what the ratio is. As for whether publicity was their main motivation... I don't know if they'd undertake that kind of expense/effort just for a bit of buzz in very niche circles. I'd guess the showrunners wanting to play with toys is just as much a reason as anything else.
Adam Lytle (@nerdburglar.bsky.social) reply parent
I don't know... I applaud the effort and get a kick out of them trying to go old school. But it seems like it was maybe more trouble than it was worth.
Adam Lytle (@nerdburglar.bsky.social) reply parent
One interesting modern example that I think illustrates your points is The Orville. They used a physical model for some of shots of the ship - the slower moving shots and even those had CGI enhancements. But then in season 3 they gave up on the model and switched to exclusively CGI.
Adam Lytle (@nerdburglar.bsky.social) reply parent
Hm! System Shock 2 vibes.
Adam Lytle (@nerdburglar.bsky.social) reply parent
Yah i noticed that. So weird. Do they just go wrong the internet making comments like that on every instance of a ship the doesn't have two nacelles? Anyway, not as annoying as the ones that take any opportunity to shit all over the the ships from Discovery.
Adam Lytle (@nerdburglar.bsky.social) reply parent
Oh that's very nice.
Adam Lytle (@nerdburglar.bsky.social) reply parent
It definitely seems like a scaled up redesign. They also removed the lower hull section with the deflector. Kind of a weird design choice, IMO. But the original design is so strong it lends itself well to this sort of re-imagining.

That is maybe the funniest line and line read in all of Star Trek.

At least with medical the precedent for light blue goes back to McCoy's smock and carried through to Doctor Crusher's lab coat. So even if the standard duty uniform is the same blue as science there are accessories that can be added.
Adam Lytle (@nerdburglar.bsky.social)
This legit just works as a Starfleet uniform?!

I had JLA #24 and a reprint of Amazing Fantasy #15 printed poster sized like 20+ years ago and the JLA poster is still hanging up. The Amazing Fantasy #15 is rolled up in a closet.

I don't know how we get there, but in my mind personal vehicles for around town errands should be glorified golf carts that you trade in for a car capable of highway speeds only when you have to travel long distances. It's truly stupid that we use such powerful machines for every use case.
Adam Lytle (@nerdburglar.bsky.social) reply parent
Apparently not! Or at least, we now have two freak occurrences - I have no idea how common it is.

Haven't had a chance to tread Vanguard yet, but I don't think they feature any main TOS characters? Seems like that could at least be a basis for an Andor-like drama that comments on contemporary issues with a familiar aesthetic.

Hot damn, Todd McFarlane art!
Adam Lytle (@nerdburglar.bsky.social) reply parent
FTR though I think the finished version of the Discovery is a pretty cool design!* I think it's a testament to how you can take something less than ideal and finesse it into something much much better. *okay I have a few quibbles, but that's true of a lot of ships.
Adam Lytle (@nerdburglar.bsky.social) reply parent
I think what Fuller/other CBS execs saw was Star Wars reviving Ralph McQuarrie designs in Rebels & Force Awakens to generally positive response and thought it would be way to harness nostalgia? I dunno, just a theory. But if true... Woof. Talk about not reading the room.

Riiiight. Taking this loss prevents a bigger picture, long term loss.
Adam Lytle (@nerdburglar.bsky.social) reply parent
I am kind of curious if China just straight up doesn't care about the long term viability of the coal plants. They need the power, they can afford to build the plant now to provide the power, and are willing to take the loss on it being a stranded asset in 10-15 years.
Adam Lytle (@nerdburglar.bsky.social) reply parent

Adam Lytle (@nerdburglar.bsky.social)
Haven't had a chance to watch the new SNW yet, but talk of holodeck episodes has me thinking of which ones I like best. So here is my rough top 5: 5) Our Man Bashir (DS9) 4) Elementary, Dear Data (TNG) 3) Badda-Bing (DS9) 2) It's Only a Paper Moon (DS9) 1) Crisis Point (LDS)

Setting aside the terrible wind power take, it is always very funny to me when Trump feels the need to explain something very simple. ie the 'plane' thing here or the word 'groceries'. Like, no my guy only you needed those things explained.

I've seen the odd one here and there in the wild, but never book one. They are fairly hard to come by it seems. Just recently though, I missed my chance at getting them all for super cheap in an online auction - I am still sore about it!
Adam Lytle (@nerdburglar.bsky.social) reply parent
Fair, but you can also level this criticism at the rank pips of the TNG era. Fairly visible in close proximity, as long as the person is facing you... And does not have a big bushy beard

I don't know or care how they would justify it, but Jo Martin should just be the next Doctor.

Adam Lytle (@nerdburglar.bsky.social) reply parent
I generally like them as a concept, but would agree that the Nova seems quite imbalanced with what must be a fairly small shuttle bay as compared to the storage dedicated to the Aeroshuttle. Would be cool if some Nova class had a drop bay for a few shuttles instead.

Here in Toronto they're replacing the ferries that serve the islands w/new electric models. As with many municipal gov't projects there have been... problems. But I'd be interested in the economic case for the smaller, privately run water taxis to switch over to electric.

Love that 2290s evolution of the TMP era enlisted uniform. Funny enough, thinking about whether they'd all be red or the classic division colours has made me wonder for perhaps the first type ever if there is an established timeframe in the lore for when they did that red/gold switch.
Adam Lytle (@nerdburglar.bsky.social) reply parent
Yeah, that's the idea but I'm very skeptical that it actually moved the needle any. Reminds of the late 90s trend in comic books what's they'd start a series over at "#1" only to reintroduce the legacy numbering a few years later.

Yeah I can see the from her standpoint. And I suppose the Bajor reconstruction thing could warrant a science advisor of sorts. Just a weird contrast with the other show about an exploration vessel.
Adam Lytle (@nerdburglar.bsky.social) reply parent
I also think modern vfx and the fictional tech of Star Trek could be used to play with some of this stuff. Maybe uniforms could change colours/patterns on the fly for ad hoc/emergency re-assignment. Like when Tom Paris was the EMH's assistant medic.
