This week an ONS survey said less than half of people in England and Wales think the police are doing a good job, a historic low. The government response, the only one reported, was "more cops". Nothing about resourcing alternatives in local communities that might genuinely make people feel safer

Just to put this into some sort of context, last night the Metropolitan Police imposed conditions on court support for Kneecap for a "protest pen" that holds 100 people. Ten times that number is expected. They left no time to challenge this calculated political decision in the courts
