If anyone wants to understand why I tend to be gloomy... 1. Zero vacations aside FWA and none likely through summer 2026. 2. Nothing all that fun locally to look forward to. 3. I have to deal with the non-academic world. I *hate* the non-academic world.
I am okay with that and believe if we have Fed' government, all resource allocations from Federal funds should be proportional to revenues generated by the states. No more handouts. State can't afford sh1t? Raise. Taxes.
When I leave academia for the day, I am quickly reminded of how utterly stupid most people are.
Just rid Fed' government. Period.

Sure, yet those are not likely the sole factor contributing to house purchasing capabilities. If you have $1,000/month student loan repayments and are only making $50,000/annual, you're not going to be buying a house just by pure economics.

There are so many other factors to this than credit scores. Housing market bubbles in the mid-late 2000s and again since 2020. 30 year olds having severe student loan debt (rare for college students to have prior to around 2000). Wage stagnation since 2009.

As I said. I am pretty done with work and life. I want to do the most minimal effort possible, collect a measly pay enough to cover most of my monthly bills, and mooch off my investments. No "office" anything required. π
It's easy enough to turn off the auto Cloud crap, and they start hounding you to pony $$$ to upgrade your Cloud storage. I only use MS Office bc it interfaces easier with my work stuff. But then, I'm sick of working. I want to retire or drop to PT retail.
I dunno... I think back on how Bush I, Clinton, GW Bush, Obama... They all seemed pretty even-keeled.
With trade areas, though, some employers will cover certification costs for people who've been there a while. The pay tends to be a bit better than retail, even though, yes, the work is manual over an office setting. Anything in computers is *rough* right now.

These days you're rarely stuck in a specific job you academically trained for. A chemistry professor colleague left years back to go become a rancher. My husband left communications and now works in electrical trades.
A lot of people in computers are having the same sort of issue; I know several. I suspect AI is a major culprit here. It might be worth looking into non-programming positions? What about computer hardware or IT-support for a decent company?
Oh, that has been *rough.* If you can get a position in a business or college IT division, that would be really good, though.
The U.S. jobs economy is *terrible.* I know a lot of people who applied for 25 to 75 jobs, even entry-level stuff, before landing anything at all. Best bet is to just apply to as many places as possible.

It's curious to me how MFM has always remained small. I only been once in 2006. I've wanted to return, but the timing is bad.
I suspect it's more psychological. The early 2000s ushered in the age of anxiety. I'd say we're now in the age of despair. Most Americans have a mental health disorder now. We're all trying to get by, lack energy to focus, and chase anything that distracts from the hopeless reality.
Or, we could just shitcan ai and hire people again to do the work. But they'll never do that because they've invested too much money in it to admit defeat. It's like someone addicted to gambling who's lost everything and now they're taking out a second mortgage. The water and power usage alone...π
