Finally I looked up how to use a directional compass to map irregular surfaces, and used a google topography map, and was able to do it. I learned a lot and got a useable sketch. It took a long time, though. (None of this was for work, btw.) My companion got very frustrated.
I kept trying to find out what degree of accuracy would be good, and they just kept staring at me like I was nuts.
The person thought I was crazy, doing this. I was “overthinking it”. So I tried just drawing an oval, with very approximate guesstimate measurements. That wasn’t received well. People had to be able to measure from it!
I started going out to measure the area, and discovered that job was going to be tricky, because to even get a rough but accurate perimeter outline meant getting a *very* accurate outline, and then rounding it out.
Because they were planning to use this diagram, this map, to communicate I had to know, what degree of accuracy did they want? They kept saying, “just rough”, “it should take you 5 minutes.”
This happened: we were on a rocky, hilly island, and someone asked me to diagram an area on a flat-ish surface, so they would have a sketch, with rough measurements, to communicate an idea to other people. They thought it would be fun for me.

I’m glad you have that support available, and I empathize that it’s not always easy to get it happening in practice, even when people are right there wanting to help.
It’s really hard to ask for help when you’re the one holding the responsibility. It’s just a logistically difficult thing to do, it adds another job to your plate, in a way.
I know the guilt is really hard right now. You’re doing a good thing, being in support, you need people to support YOU.
I’m so sorry. I can only speak for myself, and I don’t know you or if you have kids but fwiw: if you can protect your kid, if they trust you enough to call when things go wrong, and if they trust you enough to fight against you and rebel, you feel deep down *good*, that you made a place of safety.
