see elsethread. I don't see how to easily get either a good RGB image OR the combined alpha out of stacks of masked layers.
Sean Barrett (@nothings.bsky.social) reply parent
It's understandable that there's no reason for them to make that one rare special case work, but it's like, I want a workflow for layered image creation with non-0 RGB and seemingly nobody has one. I'll give up all the other blend modes & etc for it.
Sean Barrett (@nothings.bsky.social) reply parent
I haven't though through it fully, so maybe it's not really possible to meaningfully DO layers and alpha and preserve the colors in many/most cases. The thing is what I COULD do is use fully opaque layers w/ layer masks, and surely there's some formulation to make that produce useful RGB.
Sean Barrett (@nothings.bsky.social) reply parent
But alpha channel doesn't interoperate with layers, so it doesn't solve the actual problem when doing real work. (I assume the issue is that the internal compositing engine 0s RGB, so it's not just in the file format export, but in the innards.)

The slide is the first distinctive vocal element of the song! In each A line, the pitch alternates between root and third, then hovers on the third before finally tumbling back down to the root on "down". If you just stay on the third at the end, the whole line feels boring! What are you thinking?!?
Sean Barrett (@nothings.bsky.social) reply parent
Reminded recently by LCD Soundsystem "New York I Love You, But You're Bringing Me Down". Each stanza's lines' melodies go A-A'-B-B'-A, with A being two pitches, with the final note a slide from the high to low on the word "down". (Final A of each stanza omits slide). Live version: almost no slides.
Sean Barrett (@nothings.bsky.social)
I pretty much always hate it when pop/rock singers in live performances change the melody or slow and lag behind how the recorded version of a goes for songs I already know. The recorded melody is what I fell in love with! Why are you making it worse with your 'free expression'?
