It's still pretty tough, but it's chilled out significantly since SMT3. Vengence has some funny superbosses but they also give you more than enough tools to deal with them. It's story is kinda weak compared to the older titles though.

If you're going by points then the hierarchy is Queen > Rook > Bishop/Knight > Pawn. Rooks can corral the king far better than the bishop or knight can, since the king can move diagonally to escape their zone of control, whereas the Rook just puts up a wall that can't be crossed.
