Very grateful that @sharai.bsky.social wrote this, because there is absolutely a disconnect in even progressive white people's minds where we instantly recognize the first word as a slur, but not the second. That disconnect is where our privilege lives all scary season. Unlearning is a good thing!

Went to Sea World today. Ate at the fancy Sharks restaurant. Was super cool. Got to walk on Pipeline twice, Manta, and Penguin Trek also. As I was leaving I saw this adorable duck.

A duck swims against a gentle current in a small stream. The duck is small, possibly juvenile with mostly brown feathers. It has white patches around the eyes and beak. The stream is shallow and you can see hints of vegetation at the sides. A single duck foot can be seen paddling beneath the bird's body. A pair of sharks in a large aquarium.

Boiling milk before use was just what you did. They had dedicated cookware for it. (Specially shaped to contain boil-overs, which milk is really prone to.) Household hygiene had SERIOUSLY high stakes back before hot running water & pasteurization. That's… like… why they taught home economics.

Happy Labor Day! Today we're bringing you The First Union, as told by HBomberguy (@hbomberguy.bsky.social) and illustrated by Skutch (@skutchdraws.bsky.social) It's the dawn of the industrial revolution, and of the way many of us work... Have you ever heard of the term "Luddite" from an elder?

Stanhill, Lancashire, 1764. Wear and carpenter James Hargreaves invents the Spinning Jenny, the first practical spinning-frame, to make the tedious task of producing cloth a little bit faster. He doesn't know it yet, but this will destroy the world. Spurred by inventions like his, the industrial revolution will transform everything -- work power, the wealth of nations. Society as we know it began here, and it wasn't great for everyone. But a group of weavers and textile workers saw this future coming. And did their best to prevent it. Factory work paid little, since If you were living through it, opposing the industrial revolution wasn't techno-phobia. It was SELF-DEFENSE. The combination act forced unions underground into secret societies. And the greatest secret of all was their leader - Ned Ludd. Ned had been a folk character for years. In one version after being whipped by his master, he smashed two knitting frames in a rage. In more fanciful versions, he then escaped to the Sherwood forest, here he lived among the animals as their king. Some versions specifically call him 'Much Better Than Robin Hood'.

This is how I handle it. Sometimes my description is more specific, but a lot of the time the context of the image I am using is most important, so I happily explain why I chose an image in the alt. It is about making sure visually impaired people know why the pic is there as well as what is in it

Every now and then it becomes clear that a lot of leftists broadly and fundamentally do not understand the dynamics of right wing Christianity in the US and this is absolutely one of those cases

Honestly, I feel like a lot of the right wing theists forget this history also or they would not be so eager to line up to be last to be torn apart. They have forgotten that Christianity is not a monolith and internecine struggles have turned deadly for millenia.

I see this isn't a brand new attack but one that I hadn't seen before. It's quite slick.

I immediately clocked this as a bit? Like, there's no actual damage to any vehicles. Somebody knew the camera was there and potentially had the means to stage that opening and then did that with the tiniest car they could get access to. Heh.

Why read past headlines: I have personal experience with how MAHA attitudes make kids less healthy. MAHA literally thinks kids don't deserve health unless they're genetically gifted. www.salon.com/2025/09/02/t...

Don't be silly, there's zero chance we go to war with Venezuela. Unless the Fed doesn't cut rates on September 17, in which case the odds skyrocket because Trump will inevitably spin his chaos wheel to pick a new emergency to create.

Solid work all around, instead of teaching 8th graders how to read, write, and think, we should turn them into machines for badly rewriting generic AI outputs. Credit to the 8th grader, though, it's tricky to come up with a unique single-sentence summary of Night. www.bloomberg.com/news/feature...

With the novelty having worn off, most students skipped the chatbot. But about a third took up Fairchild’s offer. “Hello, I am Elie Wiesel,” the chatbot began. The students’ questions tended toward the pragmatic: “how should I start my summary about Night by Elie Wiesel,” one boy wrote. The chatbot suggested a line: “‘Night’ by Elie Wiesel is a powerful memoir that recounts the author’s harrowing experiences during the Holocaust.” The student (whose parents asked that he not be named) raised his hand. “Mister, what if I copy exactly what it says?” he asked. He would get zero points and a chance to redo the assignment, Fairchild said; better to paraphrase the chatbot if he agreed with its output. Nearby classmates who’d forgone the AI help were already well into writing their summaries. The boy stared at his screen. He toggled to Google and searched for some words. “‘Night’ by Elie Wiesel is an important state in time that recites the author’s experiences during the Holocaust,” he typed.

Those willing, by contrast, to trade away the rights and dignity of transgender people or the poor cannot be considered friends of democracy any more than those who were willing to countenance second-class status for blacks and Jews.
