It's not just "fair criticisms" against the acts, they're written by people who fundamentally don't understand how technology works. They're both ineffective at their intended purpose and a privacy/censorship nightmare.
Did you even read the article you linked? They explicitly say they’re against arbitrary ISP blocking, not defending the site specifically.
@edzitron.com has spoken quite a bit about how this is why management loves AI - if your job is meetings and emails instead of actually producing something then this seems amazing.

I feel that way more broadly towards people afraid of AI becoming smarter than humans - if *gestures broadly* this is the best that human intelligence can do then let's give the machines a try.
The point I'm getting at is that the AI in the article above was not trained on any art or writing - it's a statistical model to predict a variable. You're conflating AI with LLM's, and so your criticisms of LLM's aren't even applicable here.

Genuine question: in what way do you think the AI in the article above is stealing from artists and authors?
Personally I still consider that terrifying 🙃 Either they're supervising it enough that they may as well just do it themselves anyways, or they're not and letting LLM hallucinations into their work.
The paper they cite uses machine learning (as opposed to deep neural networks), so it would also be accurate to say they're using statistics in healthcare. Calling it AI is a double-edged sword since it gets funding and publicity based on the hype, but also hate from the "AI = ChatGPT = bad" crowd.
For clarity: MY reason for disliking LLM's is that I think trying to squeeze the entire internet into autocorrect is fundamentally a silly idea that won't lead anywhere near AGI.
I suspect that people gravitate towards this criticism because it's harder to argue with than their real reason for disliking LLM's (believing that training AI is theft, being afraid of having their job automated, believing that only humans can think and create, etc.)

Not sure why it’s originally this way, but I imagine it saves tech support a lot of headaches so no one’s calling for it to be changed.
It’s also taking advantage of already disabled people willing to try anything because the medical system can’t cure them.

Personally I wouldn't base a decision around that (though I think I'm more skeptical of LLM's than you are in general). Remote options like Google Colab (or academic compute, companies selling LLM queries at a loss, etc.) wouldn't tie you to this year's laptop hardware for those capabilities.
I think so. I've heard good things about Apple M chips, but personally the premium you pay for the hardware you get still puts me off of it.
Probably. Though in general being good at numerical computation is on the opposite end of tradeoffs to what one typically looks for in a laptop (battery life, weight, cooling, etc.)

Oh absolutely it's nothing new. I'm just kind of disappointed by how many people I thought should know better started going along with it then.
This idea was normalized to a lot of previously-left leaning people when society collectively decided that some disabled people dying (and lots of people becoming disabled) was an acceptable price to pay for ending COVID containment measures.

I find that the process of becoming a doctor selects for people extremely good at following instructions, so they tend to be a bit lost when they encounter something they weren’t given a clear solution to in med school.
To some extent, but it’s also hindered by e.g. the Cochrane review recommending graded exercise therapy that they refuse to retract (they changed the definition of “improvement” so that even people who got worse from it were counted as benefiting).
I strongly suspect that it's because those issues are ~4x more likely to affect women. I've noticed a disturbing difference in how helpful doctors try to be now that I'm attending appointments as an adult man vs when I was a child and they were primarily interacting with my mother.
Yeah, the little silver lining of COVID for those of us with ME/CFS is that this is the most attention doctors and scientists have ever given it 🫠
