It's also dairy and gelatine, so believe me, this makes life difficult. My spouse has it, and was down to 45kg before we understood what the problem was.

Oh, goodness, that's a bummer. You have my sincere sympathy ❤️ I often see this occur after an episode of acute illness or injury - not necessarily serious - I suppose it shows how delicately balanced our bodies are. An older adult has fewer reserves than a 25 yr old.
My view is that age and lifestyle are rapidly catching up with him. I work in care of the elderly: I've often observed rapid changes in a short space of time.
For me, it's not being deported that's the fear - it's being thrown into a for-profit prison, or ICE camp, for weeks. The Guardian has reported on specific cases: Germans, Canadians, a young Brit who was actually on her way to Canada!
