Not what my doctor said, nor my research found. So far, all sources of B12 that are proven to work are animal derived. Luckily, I'm not a vegan - or a vegetarian for ethical reasons, so this isn't a serious problem. But, for vegans it most definitely is. I'm afraid we evolved as omnivores .

Well, to me, it is. It may be mainly about B6, but it also mentions B12 rather casually, and B12 is far from being a casual vitamin! It seemed an appropriate place to add a warning about B12 deficiency - which is very serious in the elderly.
I too have high uric acid and have been prescribed daily tablets (allopurinol) - but I don't have any of the symptoms of gout! I questioned my doctor about this but all he basically said was "just take the pills"!
If you're over 60, B12 deficiency is very serious. If you are vegan, or vegetarian, get your blood tested.
You might just have been lucky. I had a dizzy spell so bad that I couldn't get out of bed. My bloods came back with zero B12! I needed 6 injections to get back to normal, and now have an injection every 3 months. I am a vegetarian who doesn't eat eggs or drink milk.
'Health food' shop = rip-off playing on people's anxieties and misunderstanding. Almost everything they sell is useless, if not actually dangerous. Second only to the 'beauty' industry.
There is no proven non-animal based B12 suppliment. I assume you are young? For older people (65+), B12 deficiency is very serious - permanent nerve damage, or worse. Vegans approaching their 60s should talk to their doctors. (I am a 71 year old vegetarian and have to have quarterly B12 injections.)
