the 'solution' to the anti-immigrant sentiment is for our political and media class to stop lying about it. they're causing this problem themselves. immigration is not a problem in this country. it just isn't. our press is racist and our politicians are scapegoating.

Oooooh turns out Dad hasn’t seen Raging Bull before and didn’t seem interested in watching it with me because he thought it was ‘just a boxing film like Rocky’ I’ve tick him it isn’t… he’s in for a (uncomfortable) brilliant treat soon.
Roger (@plankton1975.bsky.social) reply parent
I’d put it in the same class as Get Carter, brilliant performances, really uncomfortably nasty at times, but absolutely riveting.
Roger (@plankton1975.bsky.social)
Raging Bull - wow. A brilliantly compelling film about a deeply unlikeable man.
Roger (@plankton1975.bsky.social)
Unite the Kingdom by hating the other… doesn’t seem particularly ‘uniting’ to me.

As expected, Charlie Kirk's killer, Tyler Robinson, was a black trans muslim Democrat... oh, hang on... sorry - he was the son of white Christian Republican parents in Utah and was taught to use guns from an early age. What a fucking surprise.

I want to watch Raging Bull, but I think I’m probably too tired for what I know will be a great but grim film.

So, came home with Raging Bull, and just before I got home To the Ends of the Earth was delivered 😀

I could just stream it… but by all accounts it’s one of the best 4Ks ever released, and Criterion discs can sometimes be like gold dust. While it’s still there (the film and HMV), I decided to hell with it, might as well.

Went back in on my way home, got the Criterion Collection Raging Bull 4K.

All of this is correct, though? Kirk was a bigot. He hated the marginalized. If it was you instead of him he would laugh. He was a terrible man.
Tom Usher (@tomusher.bsky.social) reposted
People will immediately scold you for pointing out how bad someone was when they died when no one doing it wants political violence, no one doing it wants war, no one doing it wants preventable deaths to happen. Charlie Kirk was the one that wanted all of that, and he’s the one that died
Roger (@plankton1975.bsky.social)
I bet for most of the people in the UK seeing the murder of Charlie Kirk dominating the headlines, it’ll be the first time they’ve ever heard of him. That a far-right podcaster (who said that gun murders are an acceptable price for the 2nd Amendment) is dominating the news here is depressing.

I’m still kicking myself that I took so long to watch it, after doing the same after only just recently watching I, Claudius for the first time 😅
Roger (@plankton1975.bsky.social) reply parent
Can’t watch everything I guess, plus many youngsters just have an aversion to watching older stuff I suppose. Not saying it’s right, though some films can age more than others. Hell, Master and Commander is what, 22 years old now, so it’s not exactly new.
Roger (@plankton1975.bsky.social) reply parent
I’ve enjoyed some of the classic naval films over the years, but none of them feel quite as authentic as Master and Commander, in the same way Das Boot is by far ahead the best film set on a submarine. THAT’S the naval film I’d point younger people to next tbh.
Roger (@plankton1975.bsky.social) reply parent
A really good chunk of that has the Enterprise and Reliant playing cat-and-mouse with each other, similar to the Surprise and Acheron. Plus the captain and doctor being pals is another aspect they have in common.
Roger (@plankton1975.bsky.social) reply parent
Probably because it’s really really good, and by all accounts really bloody historically accurate. I’d only just seen it for the first time recently and I was shocked how good it actually is. Though I understand the Trek comparison, to a point. Star Trek II is pretty much a navy film in space.

Watched Master and Commander again in chunks over a few days, it’s an absolutely stunning film. It reminded me a little of To the Ends of the Earth, which I thought was on Channel 4 but turns out it was on the BBC.

I just wish his normal pharmacy could just do it, as they can just deliver his other meds. There’s probably reasons why though, but it’s still annoying.
Roger (@plankton1975.bsky.social) reply parent
If he got them at his appointments it’d add another hour as he has so many meds he’d have to wait until a) they’re ready and b) someone could get them. Then he’d have to wait for hospital transport (he uses that as again, too far to walk from where he’d have to park, even further than the pharmacy).
Roger (@plankton1975.bsky.social) reply parent
It’s still slightly awkward, as he can’t wait there as its a car pick up/drop off point, so I need to wait for him to come back around 😅
Roger (@plankton1975.bsky.social)
Went with Dad to pick up his hospital meds, third time I’ve done it now I think (he has a renal appointment every 3 months), as parking is a nightmare and he’s been struggling to walk to the hospital pharmacy anyway. Smoothest pick up so far, I was in and out in a couple of minutes.
