Mamdani was attacked to the tune of millions of dollars because of his stance. He said he'd arrest Netanyahu. Students who protested Columbia's ties were expelled because of this stance. Mahmoud Khalil and Rumeysa Ozturk are facing deportation over this stance. For many, it's not drive-by activism.
(technically I don't disagree! It's a moral imperative, imo. How can you "defend democracy" without standing up to literal genocide and apartheid? I merely call it national policy because it's not in NYC in a literal sense. Doesn't mean it isn't important!)
I agree with you, and I'm decisively left-wing. If the left wants power, it has to get local too, to show people "We can make your lives better now, and govern well." This inculcates a base of support to gain prominence everywhere. But even still, he does have some national policy. Palestine mostly.
He's in a mayoral race—national policy is irrelevant. He's not backtracking on defund the police as much as some think. He wants to eliminate police OT as much as possible. This would remove hundreds of millions from the NYPD. Raising pay would keep individual officers happy despite the budget cuts.
If it matters, Graham went on the majority report, and they directly asked him to his face whether he was going to be another fetterman. He immediately knew what they asked, laughed, and told them they didn't have to worry about that happening. So he recognized the suspicion and answered directly.

I believe so, yes. The actual issue is 1) convincing voters in California this is necessary, and 2) litigation possibly delaying these maps post 2026. Should still do it, but those are the sticking points.
Voters will decide whether or not to suspend the independent redistricting commission of California until 2030, handing redistricting to the California legislature. This enables a redo of the US house seat maps for California before 2026. This suspension only happens if Texas redraws its maps.
I'm not concerned because Mamdani, as all the business leaders said during that meeting in July, is firm and relatively unyielding on his policies so far.
