It gon' be hot this week.

With the caveat I havent fact checked this, but I have seen numerous similar and corroborating write ups, both in terms of energy and water AI usage pales in comparison by orders of magnitude. andymasley.substack.com/p/a-cheat-sh... Like the average USian uses ~100gallons of water a day. UK? ~36.
Will (@popher.bsky.social) reply parent
I think thats a little inaccurate - AI (whether you like it or not) is everywhere and completely changing how (some) people work. Choosing not to use it (can) come at a cost, too. And I think people dont understand the scale of energy/water costs of AI vs other things they use every day.
Will (@popher.bsky.social) reply parent
Right of course, but that type of violation is different to torrenting terabytes of books or movies or whatever Meta et al did to train their models.
Will (@popher.bsky.social)
Truly never understood scifi media where everyone hated robots until the last year or so. This made me chuckle. Fraking toasters, clankers.
Will (@popher.bsky.social) reply parent
YMMV. I've found the output/usefulness varies a lot depending on the model, the prompt, the context, etc. It can be very good, it can be very dumb.
Will (@popher.bsky.social) reply parent
For coding purposes, it's incredibly powerful. Most of the code it was trained on is gonna be stuff that was open source (in contrast to general text which was largely copywritten). The energy/water usage should be considered, but folks still meat and consume dairy products and fly planes and drive.
Will (@popher.bsky.social) reply parent
thats how it feels

Who's the worst cartoon character? I vote Henry, the dad from Dennis the Menace. He's a mask deliberately invented to whitewash the identity of his creator, Hank Ketcham, one of the worst men to ever make comics. It's gonna take a thread.
Will (@popher.bsky.social)
I always get so confused that the US and UK both have comic series named Dennis the menace and they both started in march 1951 and they're unrelated. Til: the creator of the US strip was a massive racist.
Will (@popher.bsky.social)
There's nothing quite as boring and kinda depressing as that first day when you're back from a trip. Gone is the excitment and adventure, and now you're hungry and you gotta figure that out too.

People are melting down at a Tribune article about CHSD 230 considering adding Arabic to its language learning electives. I wasted time in the comments, which I normally avoid doing since it's useless and awful, but it led to possibly the funniest thing anybody's ever said to me about France.
Will (@popher.bsky.social) reply parent
Both work tbh lol. And yeah it's a very valid philosophy. However I'm so very tired right now I'm not sure which I would pick

Remember: the greater the emphasis placed on a lawyer being “distinguished” or “leading” the weaker the legal argument will tend to be. A good legal argument does not need such epaulets, and a bad legal argument is not saved by them.

Old Soviet joke for today: A man walks into a newsstand every day, looks around, and leaves. After a long time of this, the owner says “Can I help you find something?” “I’m looking for the obituaries.” “The obituaries are in the back of the newspaper, comrade.” “Not the one I’m looking for.”

2016 reserva rioja with the beef. Beef was just way too rich and the crab Rangoon was way too much. So I only ate half and they put it in a doggie bag. The cheese was also an unnecessary extra order by me, but it was pleasant. The cocktail he made for it was excellent though. Strawberry cognac fizz
