"Due to a software issue, the driver side window's automatic protection system may not operate as intended and result in the window closing with excessive force on any obstruction such as a body part." The car industry has been able to write software to do this safely for 40 years.

If something in window add force. If something in window reduce force. My guess would be a programmer accidentally put in a "+" when it should be a "-". Also this shows a defect in their pre release testing process. (No pun intended).

It’s actually a really complex system. For example, getting torque feedback in real-time requires precisely timed measurements. The system also has to autocalibrate for motors that age. Lots of details to care about - and that requires an engineering culture that believes God is in the details.

I am so tired of "software everything", not everything needs to be software. Push a button, complete a current, move gear in direction is infinitely more reliable than adding compute in front of it.

Not so for window lift, alas. It used to be like that until a small child stepping on the switch killed themselves.

Also, let's stop letting Tesla and other stupid tech companies off the hook with the "glitch" word please. It's not a glitch: it's shitty programmers working in a shitty culture and ruled by shitty managers who report to an utterly shitty human being.

It's not a glitch if it does it every time, under the same conditions.

Rumors Say @rumourssay.bsky.social

That ship sailed when Tesla was allowed to dictate what was reported as "good" automotive software.
