All scientific grant funding must now be approved by a political appointee and "demonstrably advance the President's policy priorities." I wonder where innovation will happen in the future? It won't be in the US arstechnica.com/science/2025...

I'm curious about how much of the money needs to get kicked back to Trump in order for a grant application to be approved. Maybe we should ask John Roberts.

I remember watching the movie "The Hunt for Red October" and being surprised how everything the had to be approved by a political officer. I never thought I'd live in such a country. But here we are.

Politruks at work. They will do to American science what Lysenko did to Soviet biology.

These people just, fundamentally, do not understand that these are load bearing structures. Everything is consequence free, everything's a game. America doesn't support the university system, the university system supports America. When it's gone, it's gone.

I don’t think they care. Trump wants to be able to control everything and everyone in the U.S., period. That goal is more important than power or prestige that do not accrue to Trump.

Authoritarian regimes have this as an almost built-in feature: the regime will have a very high level of tolerance for negative long-term outcomes for the country, especially if they are balanced out by positive outcomes for the leaders.

I doubt any serious research will actually result from this system. The political operatives will demand certain conditions and conclusions that will result in scientifically useless garbage. And a lot of the funding will “disappear”. Very Soviet/Russian.

Science will ensure that the White House will look ever more tacky and class-less. The president’s priorities, after all, are primarily to spend money in making it look like an ever cheaper version of Sadam Hussein’s palace.

F this. It's so odd to watch the good things fed gov does get destroyed by "anti big gov" ppl. Whether in-grouping or eliminating (while select few still keep the money). Wish I had the foresight years ago to understand anti deep state was never anti deep state, rather WHO is the deep state.

Russia is not a competitor (they trail significantly in science investment) and China invests trillions in R&D. Trump is slashing billions in scientific investment. The US is about to become an ‘also-ran’.

The Hunt for Red October… I’m at submarine, there was a political appointee who had to oversee the running of the submarine. I guess Trump prefers Nazi bullshit, but will stoop to something socialist or communist if it fits his needs. I’m wondering, who is going to take over when Trump is gone?
