I've become a dewpoint evangelist since moving to Baltimore. I barely even check the temperature anymore
Yeah, temperature is nearly useless. I've been out on days where it's over 90 degrees, but the dew point was in the 50s, and it was great, while a 75 degree day with a dew point in the upper 60s was hell.
makes zero material difference to me if the temp is like 85 or 90 lol
“It’s a dry heat” jokes are trite but you really can be quite comfortable in 99 degree weather in the southwest provided you are in shade.
a portable neck fan is dollar for dollar the best purchase I made last year
The Battle of Gettysburg was described by participants as being fought in oppressively hot conditions, which didn't seem to correlate to the relatively fine temperatures taken in Gettysburg by a resident during the battle - mid-70s, low 80s.
Any Civil War nerd who has been to Gettysburg in early July with those temperatures knows that's lovely weather you beg for when you visit the park for the anniversary, so the descriptions and temperatures made no sense.
But a modern meteorologist was able to use recordings of "wet bulb" humidity in Harrisburg from the same time to calculate the dew point, which is turns out was in the mid-70s the entire battle, and likely higher for soldiers low to the ground amid the crops.
So this is a perfect example from history of how much more useful dew point is for determining human comfort.
