Totally different situation for us. We lived in the country. Lots of unsupervised time tromping through cattle land with our BB guns. When we weren't in the pool or doing chores around the property.

I grew up in a mix of college towns (~15k), small towns (~1-2k), and extremely rural areas. I was basically able to go anywhere on my side of town at 5, allowed to cross the highway by 7, and go anywhere by about 10. Rules were had to been home at noon for lunch, home at 6pm for dinner.
The town pool was 3 miles away, biked it twice a day. Friend lived a few miles out of town, bike to his house. Once I had a paper route and a bit of money, bike 5 miles to the mall to buy a t-shirt or see a movie. The 70s were a weird time, but great time for an adventurous child.
