I had a call with our data guy today. He was very confused with our list of services we wanted him to pull claims for. The services were indicated by a procedure code (T2038) with two modifiers (U6 + U1). He thought the plus sign means “or” Yes. That’s it. Tom + Mary = Tom OR Mary 2 + 2 = 2 OR 2

Hoo boy. That is a king-sized set of matching luggage that I cannot even begin to comprehend unpacking.

It was a very maddening conversation that my boss had to fake call me with an emergency to get me out of it 🙃

I can literally only imagine, as it’s hard to take much about what you think of as objective reality for granted at that point. Like, you want to make sure that other words really mean what you think they do just to be sure.

Yeah understandable at first because there are computer situations where (if you think about false as 0 and true as nonzero values), + means or and * means and … but people should catch on that this is not a computer language situation.

Yeah. Especially cause we were messaging on Teams first and I said “it needs to be T2038 with U6 and U1 together. It is not T2038 U6 or T2038 U1 separate. It’s both modifiers together” Even with typing that, he still thought it was “or” 🫠

Makes sense, maybe he’s coming at it from the interface of the database where + could mean or. Still infuriating though if he wasn’t trying to make it easy for you

Even more maddening was I typed “it needs to be T2038 with U6 and U1 together. It is not T2038 U6 or T2038 U1 separate. It’s both modifiers together” and he needed me to call him because he thought it was or 🫠

Ok yeah. That’s on him if you explicitly said and and explained modifiers together, it’s on his comprehension 🤣

“Before we begin, I need to lay out the reality we need to share in order to be successful. How’s next week looking? As in, the entire week. We need to nail down kindergarten through at least 5th grade.” It’s not like “+” is used as OR in any code (that I am aware of)….how does this even happen?

Yeah I’ve got NO clue. I can see + meaning “and” “plus” “in addition” “with” Never “Or” 🫠
