It's interesting that this means different things depending on when you read it... First it would have been the stormy look of the TV static/snow. In the 90s, if you ran your cable box thru your VCR, the dead channel was a blue screen. And nowadays it's black 🖤

It's really considerate of TV manufacturers to make sure that whenever they change how their screens display "no signal" it still matches something the sky does

After so many years, an itch that other cyperpunk fiction adaptations never quite scratched. I hate apple with a passion and refuse to pay into that service, but the moment it comes to physical media or a more potable platform I will gladly throw down a fist full of new yen to take it home.

On one hand, I’d love to get all excited about this. But there have been so many crappy adaptations of sci-fi and cyberpunk books that I will believe it’s a good movie once it is out. Eg. Not exactly the same genre, but Dead Reckoning was such a disappointment. And from a solid director as well.

I read the trilogy when it came out, I hope they do it the justice it deserves. It really influenced my view of the future quite heavily.

Your classic opener is, aptly, completely superseded by the advance of technology. Who 'tunes' a TV, what is a 'dead channel', how does it have a colour? (the Kids of Today must ask).

Dead channel on a modern TV either resorts to Blue Screen, or, more commonly now, Ads. I feel the latter would actually be a great update.

This is very exciting! But also scary. It's gonna take some creativity to update Neuromancer's version of the Internet. But maybe they shouldn't even try - it might be best to adapt everything straight up and do the story as an "alternate future."

Cyberpunk 2077 did this and it ended up being amazing.

Exactly. I feel like trying to reinvent cyberpunk AND simultaneously make a good video game/show/movie is too much of a challenge. Better to take the genre as it is and focus on making your thing a great example of it.

Though i am guilty of getting to know the novel through by playing the computer game on my C64 - but damn the Neuromancer trilogy was a good read, even though i might not necessarily be the most prolific bookworm.

Eh, that's how I discovered Nine Princes in Amber and became a Zelazny acolyte for life. The age of C64 adventures got a lot of us to read things we might have missed. (It's also the first I ever heard of Fahrenheit 451, now that I think about it...)

Ha, me too! I later played it on Amiga as well. Once I'd finished it once, it became a kind of "comfort" game, I guess? "I'm bored. What should I do for the next several hours? 🤔 I know, I'll play Neuromancer again!"

Yeah it kinda is. I started with the C64 Version and played the Amiga Version on a friends Amiga and later even got the PC Verion when I got my first 386 PC. I am not the biggest gamer but Neuromancer is one of the few games i come back to once in a while - similar to the early Lucas Arts games.

Anything that gets a kid to read a book is a good thing
