What the women stationed in a base in Antartica told Kim Stanley Robinson when he asked them about the possibility of relationships with men there: “The odds are good — but the goods are odd.”

Applies to much of Alaska as well.
all of AK
That’s been said about Alaska for a long long time.
And about tech workplaces.
I heard it about MIT
can confirm heard it about RIT 18+ years ago, lol
University of Missouri-Rolla in the '70's.
The cure for that is the tech paycheck.
Came here to say this & knowing folks who lived there, it's true
It's gotta be like the last day of summer camp when they finally finish their rotations. The fog is lifted and mister right becomes mister right now and then, suddenly, mister back there.
Had a friend stationed at the South Pole as a chef for a rotation when the planes can’t get in or out. Never forgotten an email from her with a picture of ‘the last carrots for 6 months’. Also some weirdo we knew from Seattle’s music scene went there to be their radio station DJ through Halliburton.
Halliburton Radio DJ for People with No Choice is one hell of a resume entry.
That's exactly what I was told when chatting to a woman in a bar at Chennai hot springs in Alaska. She also said she was fussy & wanted someone with more than 6 teeth & 3 hairs 😂
A woman I worked with that was from Alaska said that there were so few women that the phrase was "You dont loose your girlfriend, you just lose your turn." Id never had a positive opinion about Alaska before that but I'll say it's been way worse since.
That's a scary phrase 😳
She thought it was funny. I was horrified.
Understandable. The woman I talked to was simply resigned to being single Fairbanks Alaska was my first trip to the States, so I asked a lot of questions. My most urgent was 'where do I go to see a 🫎 And I did 😊
I've heard the same thing about Los Alamos National Laboratory.
Watch Clark.

KSR is a very subtle character harboring one hell of a mind.
😂😂
The goods:
And that's just the men, never mind the alien protoplasms
They talked to Kim Stanley Robinson, not John W. Campbell Jr
Any engineering school in the 1970's.
I would think cold too.
We'll never know the warmth, Jimmy.
I fear that's truth in the midnight hour. The lonely wail of trains in the distance.
So it’s kind of like going to a SF convention in Duluth.
Cold reception but chill response.
That's the origin of that description of Clanton? Cool 😎
Yeah, I worked there and this is so, so true. Also, regarding the acquisition of a sweetie, if you haven't sealed the deal by Halloween, all bets are off (i.e. better woo and win her by the station party, or your guy friends will start making their move.) Fun in the land of 3 dudes to every lady!
I'm currently alternating books between you two !
