The specific mutation leading to their coloration was found: med.stanford.edu/news/all-new... Our ~20 year old orange boy Conoco doesn't much care.
The cat was the color of tang mixed with streaks of brown sugar (on television).
They say that orange cats are more likely to be male, but oddly enough two of my three orange cats are female.
