I lost my sweet, menacing boy yesterday. Dugan became a bit cantankerous in his seventeen long years, but he still loved his mama. He loved the rest of his family, too. Even the five year old terror. Dugan had always been a beautiful weirdo with lots of quirks, even blessing me when I sneezed. 1/
I would always find him in strange places or positions, often with a sneer which would put Elvis to shame, as he bonked out one of his canines after a poorly planned jump. As bold and feisty as he was, he would normally hide when guests came, except for a special few. It was only after we adopted 2/
his attention-stealing pupsister Lucy that he would strut out to fawning friends as if to say, "Here I am. I've been here all along." While Dugan certainly thought himself a ferocious predator, it was he who was the most nurturing and in tune with me during my pregnancy. He knew all along, 3/
and would insist on keeping a gentle paw on my belly at all times. I'm not sure he knew what he was in for, but he grew to love my child despite the ruckus. A great, fluffy distraction, he'd always find a way to interfere with any reading and writing, often sprawling across my Bible during study. 4/
God loves all that he created. He created animals before us, and he called them good. They are his and he loves them even more than we do. I truly hope Dugan is resting in the Word once more, along with his regal and majestic brother Sway and his most affectionate pupbrother Rocky. My heart aches.
