My mom married a black man when I was a kid, her third husband and another unfortunate disaster. But I was embraced by a loving family who took a shy little girl and made me feel safe and loved. My new grandma was a great cook, a very sweet soul, and a kind person. So much of her love shaped me too.

Me too. Broke my heart when she died. She was the glue that held them together though, and my mom divorced her son, so we moved on. Years later I was in nursing school and ran into a cousin from that family and we reminisced for a while. It was great to reconnect.
