Not enough. They seceded from the union and committed human atrocities. The leaders should have been hanged publicly and the slave owners should have had to pay reparations to their slaves. Including parcels of land and livestock. They had lived on the backs of their captives for decades.
I agree with punishing slave holders. Instead of carpetbaggers the freed should've gotten their estates.
Absolutely. The land should have been given to the people who worked it and the livestock too. Slaveowners should have been left destitute and forced to work for a living. Something they never had to do.
