An of course Farage is a stamp duty (tax) dodger
An of course Farage is a stamp duty (tax) dodger
Told everyone he’d bought a house but it’s been put in his partners name to avoid higher stamp duty apparently. So that and this 👇need highlighting in PMQs together with his lies to Congress about free speech and how he hasn’t banned certain journalists. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...
Funnily enough, tax evasion by the richest 10% is around £9 billion, vastly higher than the cost of immigrants. But I don't see Farage or Reform tackling that in their manifesto!
Terrible start to a sentence, not funny, had me shrieking again. Avoidance is bad enough because only the wealthy can afford the advice to protect assets but we’re talking about criminal activity of the wealthiest 10% but let’s blame asylum seekers FFS
Good catch Charlie! Mind you she's still not setting a good example to young women...I mean, an inflatable canoe!? We have 1 & they weigh a ton with water in them...
Yes but she was deputy PM and Housing Minister
Wow! Just wow!
🤬
And so many of the people gunning for Rayner say “it’s the hypocrisy I don’t like”
Oh the fucking irony
Double stds. Zero irony. Std rich entitled b0ll0x. And large swathes of the ‘working class’ brain washed & conned to go along with clearly absurd notion to their own detriment. Utterly bonkers but have to hand it to the rich right wing elite & their manipulation of the media & political discourse.
Labour really need to capitalise on this outrage over tax avoidance / evasion by closing all the loopholes now. Let's see all the right wing press get their knickers in a twist over defending something they've been screaming about for the past week.
Absolutely
They are fuckin vile - bet they ain’t running front pages on Farages various grifts.
Despicable people. They’ve milked it for 14 years and now they are shitting themselves. Wealth tax now. Labour have nothing to lose. They may as well hit the influential rich while they can. Lower tax for low earners, move tax brackets and possible win again.
She didnt dodge it. Her mistake was not to take tax advice.
What you are missing is that the second article is meant for MEN.
Well to do men who aren't Labour politicians and who aren't working class. #wato
My irony meter just burst into flames.
I sold mine for scrap ages ago. Got a half eaten packet of crisps for it.
As much as that? * frantically beats out flames *
Farage is a fan of tax avoidance, but oddly the right wing newspapers never criticise him... www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/poli...
Of course utter hypocrisy form the Establishment but it really is in all camps x.com/robjeffecolo...
I'm sure the article will say to take proper tax advice, unlike Rayner who didn't. No one forced her to make the mostake
🤣🤣🤣 of course the Torygraph has double standards.
Two tier Torygraph
Rayner is as right wing as the Telegraph. Probably, more right wing.
Tax avoidance is ok if you’re middle class?
Ha!
Such colossal hypocrisy isn't it. And the info on Farage avoiding tax on a house by buying in partners name.
Labour For Me But Not For Thee
This is the inherent contradiction of our corrupt media.
(Almost) unbelievable hypocrisy! However, given the level of toxicity in the uk media today, its not surprising 🤦♀️
I hate Labour, Tories & Reform. I want an independent Scotland. But this is clearly because of background & the fact she's a woman. Someone who doesn't sound like them, isn't part of the "old boys" club doing well. How many expenses are fiddled/taxes avoided by Tory & Reform MPs?
Funny how the photo isn't for a house on the Rayner article, but rather her vaping and having her chin down in an unflattering way.
It's from The Sun paparazzi
Yes when they papped her children on holiday.
Tax avoidance is legal. Most people do it. But I understand the point being made!
Them and the Times repeatedly using her holiday photograph which isn't very flattering annoys me too.
The difference between tax evasion and tax avoidance is
You couldn’t make it up!
Same day!!!!
The first paragraph: “first, don’t be in the cabinet.”
Ffs, you honestly couldn’t make that up 😂😂
Yeah but she's a working class female who has succeeded by sheer ability and determination to rise above her station, whereas they deserve the money they inherited and deserve to keep it.
Fuck the Telegraph and their absolute crap.
"shield your wealth"? Get bent.
Oh, the hypocrisy. Will no one think of the millionaires?
As I’ve commented elsewhere . The Telegraph needed to to issue a warning m, ‘ Any common people reading this ; this scheme is not for you .’
Laughably awful
As to Labour & what it's done with Rayner near the helm, I'm more than happy to go head-to-head against her on their godforsaken policies to date ... but this tax bollocks? Give me a cricket wicket & line up these Right-wing churnalists & I'll send them home in boxes. What f*cking misogyny!
Not mad about the first bit but 👍 to the last bit.
that's fair enough.
You couldn't make it up......
How did the Telegraph find out this information?
Wouldn't have had her as a telegraph reader
Angela Raynor is a victim of the right wing bigots. Hard working and competent…unlike them, she will be missed.
Shame left the editorial desks of the right wing press many long years ago. It remains breathtaking to those who care, but the world is swiftly being captured by the shameless, who don’t.
Well, yes, it's the Telegraph, but if the knives are out for the working class like this, shouldn't we give our enemy a name? Even if it's editorial, why let them hide behind the masthead? Social media, covering this kind of class war, should provide their social media handles. Let them feel it.
Maybe we’ve all misunderstood the Telegraph’s coverage of Rayner. Maybe they’re trying to be complimentary? “Rayner avoids tax bill. Well done! This is the sort of agility we need in politics, give her a promotion.”
A newspaper founded out of spite in 1855, and still churning it out on a daily basis.
Is that what they call vaping now? "Dodging Tax"? I can't think of another good reason to use that photo in particular.
It's the rotten Sun paparazzi
Well, the rotten Sun paparazzi and the mysogynist Telegraph photos editor and the malicious Telegraph editorial team, yes! I doubt it's the kind of picture they used to accompany Jeremy Hunt's Stamp Duty story - if they even covered that at all.
Nothing surprises me now I know they’re one of the Reform UKKK Ltd’s conference sponsors.
nice ink
🤦♀️
Fucking hypocrites
FREE SPEECH.... murmur murmur murmur NORTH KOREA... murmur murmur murmur ARREST A COMEDIAN FOR A JOKE I DONT LIKE... murmur murmur lie!
Tax evasion is for the rich, not for Labour voters.
It is? I wasn’t aware
How dare they!
Evasion and avoidance is for everyone, it just won’t be used against some as it would others
I like Starmer's stance, every piece of 'corruption' by his Ministers I believe has ended up in a resignation. He isn't tolerating what we saw in the previous government which was to try and hide it. How ironic considering the continued discussions that Boris is having around his conduct.
The right beyond ironic
Laughing in our faces!
It must be #NationalHypocrisyDay.
Well spotted! Given the number of MPs having more than one home/properties, it appears regardless of political leanings, many are given 'the wrong advice', or it is a convenient pathetic excuse which some try to fool us with.
@davidallengreen.bsky.social there are legitimate and illegitimate ways to avoid paying tax, as you know.
And you'll find that what she did was exactly what the Telegraph suggests others could do.
The Telegraph .. nothing if not patriotic.
wait a second, the thing being reported as "underpaid tax by accident" was actually "lied to do tax evasion very clearly on purpose because she probably knows where she lives"
@mrjamesob.bsky.social
Staggering they absolutely know NOT what they do…!!?
Kind of like when (Baron) Osborne was *outraged, that working class people had started using IR35 rules to reduce their tax burden--a system his kind dreamed up for usurers--that he immediately forced HMRC to treat them like criminals. The same Baron Osborne www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/poli...
Poacher and Gamekeeper.
The Telegraph lost any sense of hypocrisy long ago.
They're a parody of themselves.
Shameless
😭🤣🤣
Ye olde Torygraph
Ask this idiot how to avoid Tax, second home in his partners name, 25% of his income out side MP work funneled through a private Company!!! The guy is a Trump Wannabe!!!!!
Ah I can see how this could look inconsistent but it’s fine to dodge tax if you’re born into money
I'm sure they fail to grasp the irony.
Morning Jane 💙🦋
Sheild your wealth ..how about be a patriotic citizen and pay your fking taxes
Has the hypocrisy worn off in the meantime?
The screenshots are both from 29 August, John. I don't read the Telegraph unless I have to, so I've only just seen it.
You couldn’t make it up
He eventually paid nearly 5mill, owed because he wasnt truthful about the sale of his shares in Ugov. But that was an agreed settlement which usually means it’s less than was rightly due.
It's because she's working class. Their skin crawls every time they see her entering Downing St. They are desperate to drag her down.
Meanwhile, not in Telegraph (probably not enough space, is all) bsky.app/profile/pick...
‘It’s a witch-hunt’ screams the perma-tanned bigot, without a trace of irony.
And if you are going after people, Farage hasn’t paid additional rate tax on his constituency home because it’s in the name of a partner. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...
Prime example of that old maxim directed by wealthy WASPs (white Anglo-Saxon Protestants) at peasants and uppity women - ‘don’t do as I do - do as I say’
Lmaooo
www.theguardian.com/politics/202...
It would be good if we could change the system, so the tax office just tells people what is due and then you can just pay it, rather than the system we have.
Problem is that half the time they don’t know either. This case is an example of complexity in the tax system where the amount due is dependant on multiple factors. Despite only owning one property the higher rate of stamp duty applies due to the trust and the deemed beneficial interest.
I'm not sure we can trust people to pay it in a timely manner after the event
The state doesn't trust anyone to pay taxes now. It is why there are fines, powers to seize assets and potentially imprisonment depending on how you go about not deciding to pay.
@mrjamesob.bsky.social interesting.
lol. 🤣
“It’s fine when we do it”
That is just chef's fokken kiss that is
🙄 fucking torygraph
Two tier taxes 1. The rich - do what the fuck you want it will be fine 2. The working classes - pay every penny you owe or we will send in the bailiffs take your home fine you to the hilt and stop complaining about how bad it is
At the heart of it: if you want to avoid tax, first have the right parents, second go to the right school, third go to the right uni, fourth have the right accent. Finally, have the alt-right politics.
Fucking hypocritical POS tory rag. #FuckTheTorygraph
She's resigned
Let’s hope that they don’t hear about Farage’s service company.
The Telegraph absolutely livid that a working class woman is doing middle class tax.
Liberals **hate** this as well. Tbh it is highly possible that it irks them even more than the tories.
Turns out anyone who describes them self as being at any end of any scale is an extremist, and they generally hate anything that isn't them!
Ah but liberals hate it while simultaneously insisting that their grandad was working class. But the proper decent ITV drama working class. Not the scaffolder with tattoos and a season ticket working class.
There's the respectable working class and then there's the oiks.
How might ‘working-class’ be defined nowadays? Surely, not just ‘those who work’? Those living hand-to-mouth, perhaps, with no tangible assets? I suppose there must still be a leisure-class. Do politicians ‘work’, in any meaningful sense, or do they just hobnob and socialise?
It means they have a Northern accent and are not Woke.
Where do I sit with a northern accent and excessive use of "cunt" but a doctorate and enough assets to not work? (I know the answer. It's "smug cunt")
If you have to work to pay your bills, your working class. There are only 2 classes, those that have to work, and the parasites that don't.
So even those that work but don’t have to fall into the second category? And those who have to work but only in-as-far-as they have to work to maintain their current lifestyle?
If you can stop working and it makes very little difference to your standard of life, then youre not working class.
It's about labour, like it's always been. Jobs that rely on other people's labour (like all income from owning assets) aren't labour. The definition of working class isn't different, the rich just want you to think they're part of it too. So no one gets French revolution ideas.
Someone who derives income from their manual labour? Not "Benefits Class". That's just a stab at a very different question probably best debated over a few drinks!!!
IMO Working class (see also “worker”) is anyone who derives a significant majority (say >75%) of their income from their labour rather than their Capital assets. Also there are only 2 classes, “middle class” is just the more affluent end of working class, invented to sow internal division.
The middle class used to be divided further into upper and lower middle class. Then there’s white collar and blue collar.
If someone else sets your work hours, you're working class. If you set your own hours you're middle class. If you have no work hours you're unemployed or an aristocrat. 😂
Genuinely these days I think it's a question of 'vibes'.
That’s more of an ‘upper/middle/lower class’ thing, surely?
Is 'working class' not just a polite way of saying 'lower'? The traditional breakdown is upper, middle and working class. The ONS use classifications from 1-8 which are more complex in their definitions but work reasonably well for modern society.
It’s all nonsense People with money people without money
What about people who have enough money to get by but not much more than that? They aren’t nonsense, they are a tool for understanding how our society is structured.
That’s more or less what I meant by “those living hand-to-mouth”.
It means you can’t make a living from owning property, so all you have with which to generate revenue is your labour. (This categorically includes people incapable of working or who can’t find work and depend upon welfare or charity.)
I feel like I've missed part of a thread here.
Is this regarding the second line? Over the past few decades, it has become necessary to pre-empt the ‘what about disabled people’ objection that is commonly raised when defining the working class.
Incidentally, the point I was making is that these days whether or not someone is 'working class' is much more about how you feel and how others feel about you than it is about any meaningful socio-economic information. There are working class millionaires and middle class folk using food banks.
I always feel when we talk about the working class, I often feel a lot of people across the political spectrum still view them through as if we're still an industrial economy and not a service based one that we are now. The barista, the carer and the IT guy are the modern working class jobs.
Also I think other jobs and industries that we don't consider as working class, but actually are, are often left out. Like say the creative industries, not everyone is a moviestar, we have below the line workers there. Or just ignored like the sex work industry.
Yes, the ‘industrial worker’ is by-and-large long gone. The occupations you mention are certainly paid employments, but does that constitute a ‘class’?
Doesn't that reflect a lack of social mobility?
I don't think so, I mean I accept that is a problem but I don't think it's what I'm talking about.
I wrote an article once for The Bookseller and said the same thing. Some people want me to feel lower down but I'm below no one. Nor am I above anyone. I'll have a look at those ONS classifications - thanks.
FFS, vibes and perception
Yes, very unreliable.
I’m not down with the kids enough and assumed vibes and perception were the same thing.
I don’t think they are however it amounts to the same touchy feely kinda stuff….but don’t listen to me, I’m a baby boomer
I wouldn't have bothered to reply if you'd mentioned that earlier... 😉
Someone on a zero hours contracts without a trade. Someone working full time on minimum wage or below average wage who needs UC. Someone without income from a BTL. Who will never inherit property. Combination of the above.
It still works if you think traditionally of 'selling labour' or 'selling knowledge.' I have toyed with 'home owners' and 'home renters' as a social difference, but increasingly thinking 'salaried' and 'hourly wage' or even 'minimum wage' as the division. I am not an academic.
As a spokesperson for all liberals I can assure you that not only don't we hate Rayner, but we actually like her and despise the tories
Nobody who owns more than one home is working class, this is so out of touch. There are no working class landlords.
Exactly that. She should damn well know her place! What a pathetic rag that paper has become.
Always hypocrites!
The Torygraph is GB News in print. It is part of the Reform Party apparatus.
They are too tight to use sub-editors anymore so reckon its done deliberately by an AI with a rapidly emerging sense of ironic despair.
Thank you for sharing 👌
Once again, a bit of reality. Cheers!
@lbc.co.uk @mrjamesob.bsky.social
Smell the rancid stench of entitled hypocrisy.
I have always said that Angela knows what they are. And none of this makes me change my mind.
This a wind up yes?
Could. Not. Make. It. Up
The Telegraph, sinking fast like The Sun. Btw is that ‘Charlie’ from the safety commercials ? ( I must get out more).
Yes 😃 youtu.be/y3FnCiRpdQ4
Brilliant! I thought I was the only one..smile to self today, social media works sometimes.
@mrjamesob.bsky.social
And in the Guardian www.theguardian.com/politics/202...
www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/poli...
He spoke at Nomad Capital's event in Malaysia, apparently this caused great amusement locally as (if I've been correctly informed) Farraj is Malay for 'lady parts'.
Pigs and troughs
bsky.app/profile/kare...
How dare someone not on our team do as we say
Typical hypocrisy of the Torygraph...
Yeah, but that tax dodging advice isn’t aimed at working class oiks who don’t know their place, it’s aimed at real people who matter.
I wish they'd go after the chancellor instead, if they needs be must pick on a woman.
She’s a good politician and the right are terrified of her
Foul privileged misogynist blue-tick wanker who got rich off the public purse says what?
We do not want Twitter posts o here. We left for a good reason.
He could be describing his beloved Royals. Does he want politicians to be funded by the private sector?
What a disappointment he is. Who's this "We" he speaks of? He's been finding ways to dodge tax ever since his first byline on the Battle of Hastings.
So so so so so classist
What a rancid creature he is
This guy? “…dreaming of the day when she is made to parade naked through the streets of every town in Britain while the crowds chant, ‘Shame!’ and throw lumps of excrement at her. … I hate her. Not like I hate Nicola Sturgeon or Rose West. I hate her on a cellular level.”
The very same.
This the same Clarkson who worked for the taxpayer funded BBC, or is this a different Jeremy Clarkson, one who isn't a hypocritical shite?
This is the sexist tax evading right-wing gob shite who doesn't know what a clitoridis is
The gormless oaf probably doesn't see the irony in his post.
Her "education" in care work at the local community college... so she could be a low paid carer employed by the local council? Such riches, what a fortune must have been spent on her. Does he realise that teenage working mums pay tax as they earn, so she paid taxes to pay herself?
Old man shouts something to be rude/incendiary cause no one has any interest in him anymore.
... which could also be said of the vast majority of people working in the public sector. It's not as though she bought a farm to avoid paying Inheritance Tax.
So what I'm reading here is she worked those jobs and earned a wage.. As a teacher, does he begrudge me spending my money earned on a home? Do I need to run it by him? I paid for a TV licence...so I (we) paid hs wage when he was on TopGear. I get to decide what he uses his wages for? Asshat...
I don't think there are many people who like Clarkson he's one ugly son of a bitch
He’s always been a total jerk (I am being very polite here- would be banned if I said what I really thought of him) But the white male cis bigots running round the country intimidating everyone love him, therefore he has a platform. I just know there are a few skeletons in his cupboard!!!
you just reminded me to add Clarkson to my mute words
The settlement for medical errors which left her son disabled for life. Yeah, free money aye Jeremy. What a tosser he is.
Jeremy Clarkson's parents ripped off Paddington without paying royalties and then talked Michael Bond into giving them the worldwide merch rights and then got rich off it. Clarkson's education was paid for by someone else's effort. www.mirror.co.uk/3am/celebrit...
Weird how he never mentions the money on his results day tweets
He's also kinda famously the head of the group who don't want the farm inheritance loophole to be closed. He's a hypocrite but that's no surprise.
I did not know this about his family. That's disgusting...
So let me get this right, Rayner got rich by working in the public sector (Uni rep, council worker MP) according to Clarkson. Who paid his multi million BBC salary? All of us through the licence fee. The Right are nothing if not lying hypocrites.
Clarkson? Cnut!* *My mom doesn't like that word so here we are....** **Soo valid though
This is Clarkson though. It's not like he tried to play the tax system by... I don't know. Buying a farm which at the time had lower rates of inheritance tax. I mean if he did that sort of thing it would be kind of hypocritical of him to call someone else out for trying to lower taxes in a legal way
Why am I not surprised in the slightest? 🤔😡
Pretty sure his career was paid for by the licence fee too
📌
