“I guess I’ve always thought of “something to vote for” as something that can benefit all of us. That’s what I want to vote for… the good of my society. Why is it limited to the individual? I mean, if people aren’t already given to that.

An example is how voting for the lesser evil is described negatively, the idea that you can always demand something affirmative to vote for. I wish that were always the case, but when it’s not we shouldn’t absolve people of their responsibility to do the right thing.
There’s a selfishness in this mentality of “if the dems aren’t going to give me enough and their pitch is we’re not as bad as the other guys I’ll stay home” but sometimes that has to be enough, otherwise you end up with (waves hands around wildly) all of this
It doesn’t mean you stop pushing them and demanding more, that you just settle for lukewarm, but trying to do that by withholding your vote, with the context of our current institutions and electoral process, that’s a recipe for disaster and ending up with irreversible damage
I get what your saying. I just think there is a whole spectrum between “we’ll give you this” and “I’m w/holding my vote.” There is a lot of room there. I get the “lesser of two evils” but hearing that doesn’t inspire people to vote. I think the larger issue is people just staying home.
They didn’t make a conscious choice to w/hold their vote, they just stayed home. Young people appear to approach voting differently. Doesn’t matter why… lack of civics, apathy?!? But it makes sense to do a better job of responding to their issues and needs.
For sure, that’s what I am voting for, too often I see it framed in a way that veers towards the individual. We have to convince people that voting for the good of society is worth it. Like I’d vote for higher taxes on myself to fund public services
Yeah, I would vote to pay higher taxes to benefit the societal greater good as well.
