The new acting head of CDC faces an incredibly tough job. Agency leadership has been decimated, morale is low, and employees no longer believe that the administration respects their mission of protecting public health. So who did RFK Jr. turn to? donmoynihan.substack.com/p/your-gover...

Well, its not good. Jim O’ Neill is not a physician, scientist, or someone with the public credentials normally associated with CDC director. He is currently the Deputy Director of HHS. He did work in the domain of public health during the Bush administration, but is more recently an employee of Peter Thiel, the Trump-supporting tech billionaire libertarian. Those libertarian views extend to public health. For example, O’ Neill has said: On non-FDA approved drugs: “We should reform FDA so that it is approving drugs after their sponsors have demonstrated safety and let people start using them at their own risk.” On paying people for their body-parts: “There are plenty of healthy spare kidneys walking around, unused.” On letting Covid spread: “Is omicron the best vaccine? Remember, CDC can redefine the word vaccine at will.”

Drug safety expert here, had to look up his full statements on FDA approval. The full context is that he wants FDA to approve drugs based on safety only and no longer require proof of efficacy. He wants the drug market to be like the supplement market.

He has less authority over FDA as head of CDC than in his current role as deputy HHS head. Changing this would also require Congress to overturn the Kefauver amendment passed in the 1960s. I also expect that a market-based approach to drug efficacy would be very unpopular.

Overall, hes a libertarian and they should never be in charge of a government agency. Fully free-market approaches to healthcare are ignorant and dangerous.

RFK’s job wasn’t to change the CDC, it was to destroy it.

The push for not having to prove efficacy has been a steady drum beat for a while supported by public's ignorant demand of more fast track approvals, while being oblivious to the medications that gave false hope to ALS pts only to find out they don't do shit.

So, umm, no. We can’t just redefine what a vaccine is, and the cruelty in saying people should just take new drugs at their own risk is off the charts. I went to school with thalidomide babies with fingers coming out of their elbows and missing forearms. The idea that we should casually repeat that…

Senator Cassidy has promised hearings. But Congress will not be able to finger-wag RFK Jr. back to sanity. Radical conspiracy theorists have real convictions, even if those convictions mean kneecapping American state capacity. donmoynihan.substack.com/p/your-gover...

As long as he stays in office, the American public has to assume that their public health is being actively threatened. A current CDC employee put it starkly: People will die because of this. We won’t be able to get out guidance or get out funding for public health departments or get out vaccines. We’re going to be sicker as a country, not as effective, waste resources. And for what? I don’t understand.

Congress does, of course, have levers to apply against RFK Jr’s actions beyond finger-wagging, but in 2025 they have been extremely loath to use them.
