"Self select" betrays an ignorance (maybe purposeful) of the impact of algorithms on the content we see and how that influences individuals.

I think you're underestimating the impact of roblox and xbox which they spent much more time on than fb/insta/twitter/etc
Trump's at -40 with the youngest voters right now; using the algorithm to con them only worked once.
"Freedom" = Authoritarianism/Kleptocracy/Fantasy politics "Traditional Values" = Misogyny/Bigotry/Racism
I've heard this narrative being pushed, but I'm skeptical there is any data to back it.
Regarding the whole "conservative Gen Z" thing.
Freedom from ever getting laid.
It's not even true. Millenials like myself grew up with the internet during a time when the internet was more organic, without algorithms and people were growing increasingly secular.
You can still see this in communities like Reddit where the algorithm is the people voting. But people are increasingly giving up their autonomy over to algorithms instead on other platforms.
Totally agree. That. And: Manipulative interaction design, exploiting cognitive weaknesses, eg leading users to believe that ”everyone thinks this way”. Ideological and commercial forces select for you.
People have long been in the habit of shifting to language of “choosing,” “selection,” “free will,” etc. precisely where they want to stop thinking about causation.
“Naively force-fed” information would be more accurate.
This is an interesting point. To truly select, you need to have a menu. Algorithmic feeds just give you more of your top choice and isolate you from diversity. Algorithmic feeds gives you concentrated dose of the most clickbaity content, which in itself is economically incentivised by ads.
Found this snippet this weekend (while I was reading about how to combat use of AI to write academic papers) - is this what Musk did to warp Grok a few weeks ago? www.nature.com/articles/d41...
About as wrong as "learned helplessness" lol
Especially vulnerable individuals whose executive functioning development is not yet complete
How does DC Draino explain why Gen Z women didn't fall in line?
That was my first response also. It's interesting that not only Mr. Draino but most commenters, pro or con, accept the framing that "men ARE the generation (and women apparently don't exist.)"
How does this moron explain that, by the same reasoning, Gen Z women do the opposite?
Anyone who doubts this should start a new anonymous account on YouTube or Twitter and see what pops up. Terrifying stuff.
Yep. My older gen z intern from work a few years ago nearly got conned into voting for a super conservative party because ... he doesn't really read. Everything is generally video clips. Especially shorts like tiktok, yt shorts etc. His values are fairly lefty actually, but didn't know it.
He just got funneled info about how certain political parties promised stuff he thought sounded nice, without any info on what they wanted to remove, or what other parties say.
It’s certainly not natural self-select. Boys — speaking also of even pre-pubescent ages — are increasingly more reactionary than their parents and/or grandparents because of content they or their classmates have been consuming online.
I have seen how anti-gay rhetoric in Scandinavia has entered the lexicon of kids whose parents are strong supporters of equal rights for the LGTBQ+ community. Kids get it from kids’ online consumption (even while people try to blame immigrants for it).
They chose violence, the most basic form of expression and the one most devoid of intellectual influence.
They choose...inceldom...because they are insufferable assholes who want validation that they are insufferable assholes.
Exactly. Feminism isn’t why they are unfuckable.
Young men are driven by their biggest fears, like being an incel, and they seek out easy solutions offered by people like Andrew Tate who promise them a better life.
Said influencer should've "self selected" some Kierkegaard because he discusses the need to remain tethered to reality if you're going to embrace the infinite
It is amazing how easy it is to gaslight and drag this generation down rabbit holes of stupidity and ignorance into believing they are victims of some conspiracy, rather than just educating themselves on facts, infantilised morons this is what America society has done that is why you’re in decline
Was gonna say, isn't the approval rating for "socialism" in Gen Z the highest gen over gen increase in history?
