Journalists, and the public, really need to learn the difference between an asylum seeker and refugee, and stop using the terms interchangeably.

As a professional in the field for the last 20 years, I have entirely given up. It's pointless to try pointing out that there are clear and legal definitions to these things. The right does not want to hear about it, the left loves confusionism too much.

Even if they weren’t legal definitions, it’s not that difficult to understand the terms. They are what they say they are.

And it’s the BBC again apparently intentionally blurring the lines… At this point, it seems they actually want to create this confusion. The government should hold state-nominated directors of the BBC accountable to avoid seeming complicit in this intention to sow divisiveness.

Indeed, the immigration data is there to see but never gets properly discussed... www.gov.uk/government/s...

Summary statistics of UK immigration for 2025. Figure shows numbers of arrivals at UK Border for different categories of immigrant. Figure also shows data for persons already in the UK who apply for Extensions of Stay, Settlement, EUSS, Citizenship and claiming asylum. This may be a subed issue, as it says "people granted asylum" in the preview? The problem remains the same, of course.
