Newsom sucks and he only stands out because the rest of the party is too spineless to say a single bad word about the president. They want to stand aside and let the policies speak for themselves. The bar could not be lower: show any opposition. And for some reason only Newsom can step over it.

A lot of dems don't hate Trumps policies, they just hate that he's rude.

Did they forget that politeness culture has always been a key factor in fascism, racism, and other far-right movements? I'd rather live in a world of people who are rude but want me to have rights and access to basic necessities than a world of people who smile at me while letting people die

Of course they didn't forget. If they had any objections, they'd stop supporting it. They'd stop funding the police, they'd stop funding ICE, they'd stop running presidential campaigns promising "the most lethal military". Democrats aren't being tricked into supporting fascism they ARE FASCIST

True! They'd also recognize how successful more progressive candidates are, and that they could be more successful if they leaned more into working class rights, but only a handful are willing to even approach that option
