We haven't even got a written constitution - it's not as if we haven't had enough time. Mother of parliaments my arse.

Not having a written constitution can be an advantage. It gives us flexibility. In this case it makes no difference. Britain did fine prior to 1950 without one. Magna Carta, Habeas Corpus, the Bill of Rights, common law all long before any supranational oversight and without a written constitution.
I think you'll find it's become a slightly different world since the glorious 1950s.
Agreed and exactly why I feel we need to revisit this and make sure it's relevant to 2025.
Yes, while still being a part of it.
If a majority of the population democratically decides, that is the way to go.
When Farage enters no 10 partly because of the vile BBC support and cowardly weakness of Lab, Lib Dems,Greens, SNP etc then the way to go is to Europe. Yes I know know he stopped that too...
Some will be swayed by the right-wing media, but I don’t think you can put everything down to disinformation and manipulation. To honestly believe that, you’d have to assume that a majority of Britons have no agency and are just mindless ants, waiting for pheromones to dictate their path.
No I am not being entirely deterministic although I think Philosopher Althusser is closest to believing the whole structure of capitalism is reproductive of 'status quo'. So most marxist structuralists claimed all ideology deterministic towards capitalism & that 'agency' is a 'false consciousness'
So if that's how you feel, then how are you so certain you personally have agency and also aren't a victim of false consciousness?
I don't I'm typical Blairite/social democrat even voted LibDem in my commuter town. These concepts we mention are philosophical/sociological tools to analyse our society. I just think Althusser is likely most correct, but I'm politically no raving Marxist.Yet economics determines our unequal classes.
And of course history shows fascism has generally been a 'conservative force' maintaining elites. Yes it changes stuff but in counter revolutionary way like scapegoating 'the other',minorities, deportations, extreme nationalism not changing elite power, high inequality, wealth distribution etc.
Sorry, like Brexit support we cannot rule out the Daily Hate Mail, The Daily Depress, the Sun, The Times,Telegraph Gbeebies and social media like X, all shifting our country to the far right bit by bit every day. Like they did in 2016 and then with Johnson and Truss.
Even taking all this as true, the ECHR doesn't actually protect us. A future authoritarian regime could just ignore it or withdraw at a whim. It is a paper shield.
