You say that, but then gun nuts are against stricter background checks to prevent people suffering from such situations from getting guns in the first place. Plus it's a lot easier to ban or reduce gun ownership than it is to restructure the entire country and every single facility within.
Also the stricter background checks thing often instantly turns into ableism like restricting people with minor mood disorders who are not a danger to themselves or others.

No your fucking ableism isn't saving kids. People suffering mental health problems are more likely to be the victims of crime then to commit crimes but are way more likely to be killed by cops. You're just putting marginalized people in danger by making it more likely they'll interact with cops.
How the fuck does preventing people with mental health problems that make them more aggressive from having guns make them interact with cops MORE? That doesn't make any sense.
Yeah that's not what I mean by genuine mental health services, I mean effective therapy made available to everyone. Trying to screen for "the next one" dosen't work because if your test isn't more accurate then the rarety of what you're testing for you get flooded with false positives.
Probably don't have enough to qualify as a gun nut, but I and all the 2A leftist types I know are for stricter controls on gun ownership. The problem is that it's not politically (or logistically) feasible to remove guns from the equation in the US. It's a non-starter, and we can focus elsewhere.
