what's with that kind of DLC for some japanese games, mostly RPGs, where it's like just some game items but not even really great items that let you clear through a bunch. like it's 'here's 20 hi-potions and a decent chunk of crafting materials'. not even pay 2 win, it's 'pay 2 skip an hour maybe'

It's tipping. You're giving the developers a tip.

I'm guessing either it's a preorder bonus somewhere and they're putting it on the store for completeness, or there's some meeting super early in these projects where a team lead *has* to have an example of some DLC and the starter pack is ol' reliable

Even stranger, that DLC is often free.

at least in those cases, the logic makes sense as “get them to open that dlc menu and claim rewards so they start thinking about your expensive dlc” - disgaea has been doing that since they could sell dlc at all

I really wish there was a way to decline that stuff. I’m trying Fire Emblem Engage and they just throw a bunch of money and high powered weapons at the player for free. I want to earn these rewards.

devil may cry 4 literally calls the dlc "time savers" and its just red orbs and other shit you can get from actually playing the game. I assume projects have to include dlc as a box check to pass internal review or something so some of them just do the bare minimum

Ankle Megami Tensei @stochasticooze.bsky.social

And then sometimes they'll just make the game-breaking weapons free DLC for no apparent reason It's quite odd

it's kabuki to allow a hyperfan to give them more money without the yuckiness of gambling (gacha) or the insult of charity (direct donations, tipping) proper exchange of money for goods/services

I once got into a minor argument with my brother because he honestly couldn’t decide whether or not to get the version of the new assassins creed that gives you a weapon that’s only decent for like the first 3 hours. Like he was agonising over it like it was a legitimately hard decision

I assume it's "corporate mandated a certain amount of dlc but we don't really want to do it". Probably a bit too much good faith, I dunno

I think it's there for people who have busy lives and might not have time to grind to get a bunch of stuff done. People see DLC and go "EW PREDATORY" but if it's useless stuff that you can easily get in game anyway, then I think it's fine if some people spend 5 bucks to save themselves some time.

I think it's literally like "fleece the superfans for all they're worth" They learned that if there's ANY DLC, people will buy it because they can, so they just throw whatever on there

if i had to guess without looking it up it's probably that namco managed to move copies of their version of it in tales of vesperia on the 360 back when no one else was doing it and now everybody is still trying to get a piece of that pie

then you get tales of arise where they purposely make the game economy a mess (feels like you aren't getting enough exp and healing items cost a ton) so they can sell levels and money as dlc

Something dumb so you can get baited to check the DLC store and see something actually worthwhile, maybe That or to prey on people who microtransaction so much that they see it as a time saver for...starting the game for the first time (???)

Never understood that. But I guess it's easy enough to implement and enough people that don't care about proper progression systems buy into it that it's an easy couple extra thousand that the devs won't say no to.
