Tenure reports often note of how many asks, how many declines. Declines often implicitly perceived as “I can’t write a strong letter.”

That’s definitely a feature that is not obvious to all, might be problematic across field or country.

And then of those letters received, how many were on the candidate’s list vs on the dept list (or both). Faculty going up should def get advice on that letter list. Amazing how often folks decide to fly solo on this!
