Almost two weeks ago, I replied to a thread that ended with the assertion that "men are not owed women" saying what they mean is that men are not owed romantic love and should resign themselves to being alone if they are not privileged enough to meet an arbitrary standard of social acceptability.

Since then I have received over 500 replies and quotes of varying levels of harassment and attacks on my character attempting to disabuse me of this notion, seemingly fixated on my use of the word "owed". It should be obvious that I only used the word in reference to the post I was replying to.

I'm going to say this as simply as I can. A gym membership, personal grooming and therapy all cost money, time and effort that not everyone has or can be expected to expend. The idea that social acceptability is as simple as "wash your ass and don't be a dick" is a position of immense privilege.

More to the point, I am not a strawman that only exists to be "dunked on" by strangers on the internet for daring to reply in the negative to someone with a larger following. I am a human being. One you know absolutely nothing about.

I believe no one on social media is owed the assumption of good faith. But neither is anyone deserving of an endless torrent of abuse by strangers based on a single barely objectionable thing that they say. As such I will be limiting replies to my posts from now on. If you don't like it, tough.
