I do wonder if there are more unschoolers than when I was growing up or if they're just more visible with social media

There's a lot more, numbers keep going up as we descend more into idiocy
I would imagine there were/are a lot of kids being hidden from the government to hide trafficking and abuse also. Sickening.
Yeah some states don't require reporting, you can just say your kid is homeschooled and that's it
I guess kids are just property.
I know. It's the thing that makes me so fucking mad as a parent. Forcing a shitty outcome for your kids that you picked is not love.
I know they exist but I've only ever encountered one new one in my adult life lol. Those poor kids.
Feel like if you want to find them you gotta go down to a place called "the compound"
I grew up in real tradcath adjacent circles (not this phony tradcath be now lmao) and they literally do have like all the family living on one property.
I’ve encountered a few but that’s because I grew up in Christian homeschool spaces tbh
I did too but I think my mom must have kept us away from them lol. For all their faults my parents believed in getting an education
We weren’t THAT close to them (tho even our own stuff got kinda unschoolingy at times) but I met some real out there types through those groups lol
Literally can’t imagine why anybody would think depriving a child of social interaction and professional teachers is a good idea. When I was a kid it was just the cult-Christians who wanted to keep their kids away from the sinners.
There are ways to do it, but it's not just sitting back while your kids run wild. Which is what a lot of people choose to do. If you homeschool it's kinda like being Christian or a man. You know if you're doing it right, and that most people in those categories suck shit lmao
If I tried it my kids would be feral animal ngl lol.
On the other side, we’ve had to pull 2 kids from school for autistic burnout and are navigating unschooling approaches for them. Unfortunately, the US devalues childhood education completely and that shows across the board, and unschooling does in fact pick up on key kid needs that schools don’t.
I know you get this. It’s just strange navigating it from my side of working out asses off to get them able to navigate and be okay in public school spaces and having to pull them bc of the damage it was doing and now not wanting but having to do home/unschool approaches!
And navigating those communities, haha, and the kind of trad / conservative / fasc elements that get pulled into it.
God don't I know it
I am the most vocal critic of homeschooling as a movement in the US....and I do it! I'm scared of gun violence! But we report to the state and I'm very adamant about socialization. My parents did it wrong, so we are trying to fix those issues
Yes, we’re huge advocates for public schools and it just didn’t work for ours. It’s funny how these things go! And good lord, yes, and even the shooting drills can be traumatic. Ugh. Sending care to you and yours!
Same to you!
Obviously this isn't the best place for discourse, but I recognize what actual unschooling is. It is not colloquially used to mean that, though. It's parents who just say "my kids will read when they're ready and I don't have to do shit"
